I recently ordered an Ontario military 18 inch machete. I ordered the machete because I was the closest design to my dad's machete that was military issue during Word War II. I have not received the machete yet and I was wondering what some opinions of it are.

I have one. I think it's going to be difficult to find something better in that range of price. The only "criticism" is that they don't come very sharp out of the box but they are easy to sharpen and then, you need to be careful.

I like the Tops Machete... You can get one for 80 bucks and they make really nice stuff. Fiddleback Forge is doing some machetes right now.... I don't know about those specificly but everything they do seems to be some of the best stuff made.( they are around 100) I know these are pricey but with knives you get what you pay for.

Or you can get a Condor which is all the machete you'll ever need and more, in the range of $30-50, depending on what type of machete you're after.

 I find the Ontario machete to be very good but perhaps a bit heavy and tiring to use compared to others. I usually use a Tramontina 14 inch for light vegetation (taro, bananas, mile-a-minute vines) reserving the thicker Ontario for heavy branches. Faiaoga

Ontario makes two versions of their machete and they have different thicknesses. The thinner "econo" version is still plenty tough, enough so that I will usually grab it first. The weight difference is very noticeable.

Ontario USGI is my favorite machete. I have the standard 18" one and the longer version. Been using 'em hard for years and they just keep going.

Durability is good. Edge sharpness and edge holding are excellent. My 18" is sharp as a straight razor.

JUst retired mine due to a breakage was working in my yard and threw it to the side like i had done a hundred times before but this time it hit a piece of 4x4 and the blade snapped, I cant complain because I should not have thrown it and it served me for 20 or so years so it did not owe me anytyhing anyway. well worth the money

A friend of mine has one and I was very surprised how thick it was. I'd like to get a 12" one.

I have spent many a day in the field with the Ontario machete. It is an excellent tool and can function as a weapon if need be. Jerry Hossom said that the properly tuned Ontario 18 inch machete would be his choice if he had to select one survival knife. That statement is quite a stunning endorsement.
