Hey guys,

I have an Ontario USA Navy spec fighting knive. Rubberish handle, black coated blade with saw behind clip point. Sorry dont have it with me to give further info. Cant find anything about it online(see other Ontario military but not this one and my work computer restricts me from veiwing "weapons sites"
Can you help me out with some spec info like steel type, and quality of knife?

Thanks
Fritz

This is the Spec Plus version of the Ontario Navy Mark III. I believe that the majority if not all of the Spec Plus Ontario knives are 1095 steel. I have used a few, they are good value for the money. The military version of that knife, the Ontario Navy Mark III is made of 440A, and as a result some of the hits online about your particular knife list the steel as such.

Thanks Smash, Now next question: I'm a Buck guy so 1095 is unknown to me although I have 1 Buck with 440A(Nobleman) where does 1095 fall in when compared to 420hc-->154CM-->s30v?

If it's a SP4-Navy, the knife is definately NOT 440A steel.

One can buy it for about $50.

Thanks Teague,
I believe thats it. How does 1095 stack up? Not a stainless I gather?

Not stainless. 1095 is a carbon steel; Ontario's takes a sharp edge and holds it for a respectable amount of time. The coating that Ontario puts on their Spec Plus knives is tough; the black on my SP is still intact, but not pretty, after almost ten years of hard use. It's the bottom knife...

No, not stainless, but high carbon steel. I actually prefer it over many stainless steels for outdoor camping and even as a survival knife steel. It's tougher and holds an edge better, IMHO. I personally own an SP-6 Sp-10 and SP-1 and like them. My RAT RC-4 and Izula are also 1095 steel and better knives are hard to find.

like what's been said already, the black kraton persian styled handle SP4 Navy is a stylized version of the standard USGI Navy SEAL Mark 3 Navy.
however there is yet another kraton version which bares a handle construction similar to a standard kbar along with a steel pommel and guard, and that's the FF4 Freedom Fighter Navy.

i really could never understand the SpecPlus series having a soft kraton handle guard.

All my 1095 from Ontario has been very good to excellent. I would put it on par with the other major manufacturer of 1095 blades Kabar of Olean. Its not stainless, but if you put a bit of mineral oil or hoppes on the blade every once in a while, it keeps the corrosion demons away.
