I was just wondering if Ontario still makes the Pilot Survival Knife with a 0.25" thick blade. Thanks in advance.

i got one last year and its .250 thick.its also very hard r-60-62 and i am now almost finishing up the sharpening, tough stuff but a good 5" bowie knife.

I'm talking about the Pilot Survival Knife, not the ASEK.

Here's a pic:

The reason I'm asking is because I ran into another knife-knut at the flea market who had just purchased an Ontario Pilot Survival Knife that was made in 1986. The blade was 0.25" thick, and I decided that I liked the knife and sheath so well that I would get a new one for myself online if they still make it with a 0.25" thick blade.

I have one I bought in 2000 at Smoky Mtn. Knife Works and I love mine. I think they still make it.

I have one marked "Ontario 2-80" which I probably bought between '80-'82 and it is 3/16's. I don't think they were ever made in 1/4in.

That IS interesting. Do you think it was possible that Ontario made a batch or two with quarter-inch thick blades? Because the one I saw was DEFINETELY 0.25" thick. Maybe only the military issue knives were made that thick?

I've got several military-issue Ontarios (including the one measured earlier); all are 3/16" thick. Further, if you go to the US Military Knives page at http://www.usmilitaryknives.com/knife_knotes_13.htm you will find a number of drawings/specs for the Pilot Survival Knife; where thickness is specified it is .187".

Its probably safe to say that whatever the knife purchased by your friend might be, it isn't a milspec Pilot Survival Knife.

Wait....you WANT a 1/4" thick blade?
i'm in the process of thinning mine down to somewhere around 1/8

It seems the general consensus is that they are not made with a 0.25" thick blade. I KNOW that the one I saw was that thick, so I guess the guy got a rare one or something. Dang it all, I KNEW I should have offered him $10.00 more than he paid for it!:D Ahhh, I'll probably buy one of the new ones anyway, just because I like the knife that much. At $30, give or take, I can't resist. I have heard a few people say they are a ***** to sharpen, though. How does the edge come from the factory?

Edit: Coffeecup, that was an interesting link. I especially liked the part about the last living veterans/widows/etc. of various wars part. I also noticed that Bernard Levine was quoted as well. I haven't read it all but am in the process of doing so right now. Thanks!

I carried my military issue Ontario PSK for more than eight years. The tip broke off and since the tang was so narrow it bent at the hilt. I wouldn't pay more than $25 for one of those when there are far better fixed blades for that price on the market.
