If you had to choose one knife to depend your life on and you could only choose between and Ontario pilots survival knife or a Buck 119, while you were lost in the woods, which would you choose and why?

Hey Sega...

Buck 119...

Because I think the Ontario pilots knife is next to useless in the bush...

Why? I figured it was made for the military so it should be good. Can you give me some reasons why you think its no good in the bush? Thanks for your info.

I'd have to go with the 119 also. I've always thought the pilots knife might be a little weak at the transition from the blade to the handle. Another plus is the buck is stainless steel so it requires less care. But as in all things if you like the pilot go ahead and give it a try it might be just what you want. good luck, ahgar

Edited to correct stupidity.
A lot of people say that the blade to tang transition point is a weakness, yet I don't see many broken pilot's knives... Yet the Buck is a better cutter, and a better designed knife (it's made to sell, not be issued). I'd go with the buck.

Buck 119, it was and is designed as an outdoor hunting/camp knife to begin with, the Pilot's Survival knife was designed to saw out of an aircraft, (it's short saw teeth are next to useless on wood) with and be a "better than nothing" knife.

Will they work in the woods, sure but the Buck 119 is more than likely going to do more general camp chores and do them better.

I used a USAF pilot's survival knife and an original Skachet as my only fixed blades camping, hunting, and general woods bumming for close to two decades beofre I figured out there was something better. My son still has that the pilot's knife and uses it regularly.

Actually, both would serve you well.I've used both they performed well
I'd nod toward the buck, due to edge holding

One question why are you limiting yourself with those 2 knives

Well thanks guys, but my problem is solved...haha. Now i have both. I went to wallyworld and got me a Buck 119 today. Now i have both.....I love them both dearly. I guess the Buck will be on my side and the pilot knife will go in my pack. That will do me just fine.......Hey, on the up side, that Buck is sharp! wow, right out of the pack. Thanks for the info. I was issued a pilot survival knife when i went to the gulf war in 90 and 91 and it served me well, so i am partial to it, but man I do love that Buck 119. I have the best of both worlds.

I would go with the Buck 119 over the PSK any day of the week. I like the PSK, I have one, and they look nice, but the Buck is also a very good knife, and the blade looks a whole lot more useful than the PSK.

I've seen a lot of pictures of U.S. Army Rangers using 119's. There was a knife mag a couple of years ago that listed the Buck 119 as one of the top ten knives used by the military. From what I understand, most military do not even use the issued knives.

I bought each of my boys one of the pilot's Knives. I personally think PSK's are worthless. Hard to sharpen and too light to hack with. They thought they were neat, a real military knife!!!! You know boys, they throw them at the barn door and abuse them. When they get more responsible it will be time to buy them a nice Buck.
