:D I have a reasonably new Ontario pilots survival knife, and was wondering what the black shoelaces job was. Is it something simple or am I missing out on something?

My first guess would be that it's for securing the sheath to your leg.

So it won't flop around.

Yep, that was the original idea for attaching the knife to the leg. If you look there are two sets of round holes, one set at the top above the belt loop and one set at the bottom through the metal and leather.

.

Also a means of lashing the knife to a sapling for use as a spear, using the two holes on the crossguard.

To hang yourself from frustration because the edge on your knife is so obtuse you cant sharpen it.;)--I bought 10 of those once to build BOB's for friends as gifts and had to re-profile every one of them to get a decent edge.I still have one in my car BOB though.Tuff knife!--KV

I lol'ed!

I've had a couple over the years, and I really WANT to love the things... but the HT is too soft for my taste and they need to be rebeveled before they cut worth spit... just about may as well start from scratch and build it right the first time, by the time you get done fooling around with 'em.

I bought a bunch of those once too. I usually file the quillions down to make it a better woods knife. I told my wife I would buy here whatever knife she wanted for her woods knife. She picked one of my ONT PSK. Go figure. Modded it and made a sheath for it. Its hers now. Moose

Isn't that the truth! I had to do the same thing for mine too. Once you get it there it's not a bad cutter. After a few years its still going strong.

The black lacing is to attach the sheath to a mesh survival vest.

I still have the one I was issued back in 1973. It was carried and used, literally, all over the world. It is still going strong and takes and holds a great edge. I just picked up another one, made in March, 1974, from my local gun shop today. As with most factory knives, the edge does need to be reprofiled...but that is not difficult to do. Most of the criticism I have heard concerning these knives is from someone who doesn't know how to put a decent edge on a knife...and then abuses it greatly!

They are one tough knife!

Just my $0.02 worth,
Ron

I made the mistake of trying to scandi the edge on one a year ago. It is currently sitting unfinished on my workbench. I may just put a regular edge back on it and blue the blade.

I put a convex edge on mine and really like it.

The heat treat may be a bit soft, but it's pretty easy to sharpen and a good all-around design.
