I enjoy modifying knives so I figured I would take on an Ontario Ranger RD-7. Love the knife being 1/4" 5160 steel but the fit and finish definitely needed some work. Here is what the original knife looked like:

and here is my modded RD-7:

I started off with etching the Ranger logo. I applied the etchant solution on 3 different occassions to get the desired effect. Once that was done, I applied bluing before stripping the paint.

The logo came out very crisp.

Here it is by a factory one:

Next I reshaped the handle. I removed much of the belly and the back. Here is a comparision pic of my work to a factory model:

Lastly I go the desired finish by using scotchbrite pads and alot of elbow grease. Here are a couple more comparison picks between a stock RD4 and my modded RD7:

I still need to finish up the edges and the finish but overall I am very pleased with the knife. It feels SO much better in hand now, almost like a completely different knife. I may do some detailed file work to the marcarta next. What do you guys think?

That came out great. Nice work. What is the etching process?

Very simple. I just apply etching solution to the taped off logo and let it set for an hour. I do that on 3 different sessions and it usually works well.

Very nice! I like the re-etched logo. I modded a RD-6 a while back, i went a different direction though.....

looks nice, man. I thought about etching the logo on my bush series 7, but i like the factory coat. Guess I have to use it more and when the coat starts to wear, then do this. I have etched deep before, but never blued after, looks really good.

Is the Scotch-Brite how you removed the factory coating? I have a TOPS knife I want to do something similar with.

Justin still makes customs and they are smoking!!!

Although most ridiculously good looking people would agree he peaked as an artist when he made the "Wererabbit"

No, I used paint stripper. It came off very easy compared to others I've stripped but the finish was rough and dull as hell underneath it. Thats where the Scotch-brite came into play.

What etching solution did you use? It only eats the logo because it's raised? I'm new to etching so I have no idea how to do it but, I'd love to try it on my RD-7.

Sorry for resurrecting an old post. I've been lurking here for awhile and finally joined. I am interested to learn more about your etching process. I have a Ranger Afghan that I am planning to do a similar project with. How exactly did you tape off the logo. It seems painfully detailed for masking tape and an exacto knife. Also, curious to find out what etching solution you used. I'm a little weary of ruining my favorite knife. Thanks in advance!

P.S. Absolutely love the way that blade turned out, looks great!

No masking tape. He said he put an etching solution (kind of like an acid, but more specific). Since the laser etched logo is already in the blade, the acid etch simply deepens it. Don't worry about where you apply it, as it will only burn away the coating (which you intend to strip) if you miss. I plan on taking a dremel tool to my Afghan and doing a similar mod, albeit with less etching (I don't really like the ranger logo).

I'll post when I'm done.

No etching but here is a 7 and 9 Bush Series at 3/16 thick with a little work.
