I've been looking around for a good medium sized outdoors fixed blade. I've considered Cold Steel's SRK, but it seemed a little long. Fallkniven's S1 was too expensive. Is the Ontario Ranger Shiv what I'm looking for???

 I have the same question too. It seems that a shiv along with a chopper would make a good woods combo.:D

I've been looking at them for a while. I like the blade shape of the Shiv, decent steel, micarta handles, good price. I think it's worth a try.

For the money I think it would be hard to beat. It is made from 1095, 5/32" thick, spearpoint, and flat ground. The ones with the paracord wrapped handles are about ~$10 cheaper than the micarta handled shiv's, but I would go for the micarta.

Team it up with a RD-9 and you would have the bases covered!

Personally I love the RD-4. I have the original one in 1/4" thick 5160, but have been thinking about the Bush series RD-4 with a 3/16' thick blade, may be a better slicer?

Anyone know where I can get a better sheath for this knife? Just by looking at some reviews and pictures of them, you can tell that the sheath is the only thing that is lacking for this rig.

chestnut ridge knife shop for custom kydex sheaths....they also have the best prices on range knives that I have seen and have a very good relationship with justin. In fact, when justin does one offs, they usually are sold on crks.

Do they only have that sheath with the neck chain? I can't find any other ones. Kydex with a belt loop is more what I'm looking for.

i have an ontario shiv that i edc... the edges are kinda thick for my taste but they touch up real nice and hold a fine edge... ive carved a spoon and done some small fir pit batoning with mine and so far so good.....

I have an original shiv with micarta handles that was made by Justin. It really is a great knife. When you consider the price, its almost a no brainer. I have read many reviews on the Ranger forums from guys that own the ontario version, and they were all positive. I doubt you will regret the purchase. Its a great all around fixed blade.

Just sent an email to Chestnut ridge. hopefully what I want isn't too expensive! All I want is a basic kydex sheath, drain hole, and an easily removable belt loop, so i can take it off and throw the sheathed knife in my pocket, which i have grown to doing with my BK2. Shouldn't be too bad, should it?

i highly doubt it.

Well, I got an email back from Jay at Chestnut Ridge. He didn't really mention what I wanted in the possibility of a custom sheath, he just said that their custom sheath (in the email it was singular, SHEATH) showed up if you typed shiv into the search bar. The only one I saw was the one with a neck chain. Anyone else know where I can get one?

Ok, apparently their custom sheath is compatible with a large tek-lok system, but ordering the knife, and the regular sheath, and the custom one, and the tek-lok, is around $78, for the cheapest I could find. I'm really not going to be beating the heck out of the sheath, so is it really worth it to get the custom one for $30 more? It might not seem like much, but I'm on a semi-strict budget. Unless there is a cheaper alternative?

I'm sure the sheath it comes with is suitable to your needs. It is not the prettiest sheath, but it is functional.
