Ontario RAT 1 folder

for the most part everyone here likes it. Its a fairly good knife espically when had under 30 bucks.

It's a decent knife, you get allot of value for what you pay...

there are a few things I would like to see different; better handle material, remove the slight re-curve in the blade and a better traction plan but that would make it cost more. What's good about this knife is that you get allot of decent knife for about 30$ shipped...

Good solid knife and great quality for the price and a pretty decent blade shape for edc use. It has enough tip to puncturing into some things and a nice sweep of a belly and a good bit of flat blade. Aus 8 steel will take a great edge fairly easily and hold it reasonably well for the price. I've always preferred 14c28n from kershaw or the chinese 8cr13mov over it. Just my .02 nothing factual there.

Overall a great knife for a low price. You will find this opinion to be almost universal on the forum here I think. It's a very well liked knife.

get one thats uncoated the coating is just paint. have you checked out the utilitac 2 same company same quality.

It's a great knife for the money. Cheap enough to customize a bit if you are so inclined.

It's a great working knife. Good size blade, decent steel, solid construction, ergonomic design, and relatively inexpensive.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got mine. Great knife. Buy two of them, then you have a spare. I do find it a bit on the large side though when closed, blade length is good for my uses.

Ditto all that has been said. I have used it as a work knife on my construction projects and it gets every dirty job I won't risk one of my traditionals on.

After three years or a bit more, it still locks up like a tank. Ditto the request for a bit better handle material as mine is just about smooth at this point. I am torn about the blade steel

On one hand, it is soft enough that you won't chip the edge if you hit something hard when cutting. The edge doesn't really roll, it just gets kind of round and dull. It won't stay nasty sharp for long. On the other hand, the steel is soft enough that a few swipes on the diamond rod for about 15 seconds will bring it right back. With the edge being a little on the thick side (not so good if you are looking for a real razor/slicer) it makes it perfect for all kinds of heavy cutting tasks that won't require you to baby the knife. I have put a lot of pressure on this knife when cutting, especially when it is a bit dull, and even done some light prying with it and the blade has never deformed.

Well worth the money, even at a higher price.

I don't see anything here I don't agree with!
I too recommend against getting the black blade as you will soon have a very ugly blade. The paint scratches off very easily.
Good work knife as long as you aren't concerned about sharpening it.
I can't see how you can go wrong especially at this price point!

One of my favorite folders (have 7) :) and have never had a single problem with one.

I'll go with what folks have said about the blade coating, it is just some kind of painted on thing and wears quickly

I'll put a RAT 1 up against a lot of knives that cost 2-3 times more.

It is a great value and I really like mine. However, it is bulky and a bit heavy for my uses as an EDC. For you it may be perfect. And personally I like AUS8 as it will get wicked sharp very easily. There seems to be a good bit of variation in the quality of AUS8. I've had some knives that use it, which now sit in a drawer or box somewhere, but the RAT 1 is not one of them. It is a knife I put to hard use and really like it.

Also, it is produced by Ontario and is not affiliated with RAT which was the predecessor to ESEE knives. There is a long back story that you can look up if interested. That said, Ontario makes really good products.

Also, the price of this knife varies a lot. It can be bought new for $25-30. I've seen them listed for $60+ on some sites. They are the exact same knife. Buy one, you won't regret it.

I bought one of these about 5 or 6 years ago for about twenty dollars. I figured for twenty bucks what the hell if it craps out I aint out much. They have now been discontinued if I could find some I would buy 2 or 3 more its been a damn good one. I have done many things with it that most "cheap" knives would break in half. I hope this RAT 1 will hold up honestly it has big shoes to fill. imo...
