Hello,

I was thinking of picking up one of these knives. I see them described as having G10 scales at some online stores, nylon scales on others.

Is one of these in error? Or is G10 considered nylon?

Thanks,
Michael

They are great blades IMO I have been doing my research for my next woodsman blade and I have finally made a decsion to go with a Ontario Blade...

"G10 laminate grades are produced by inserting continuous glass woven fabric impregnated with an epoxy resin binder while forming the sheet under high pressure. This material is used extensively in the electronics industry because its water absorption is extremely minimal and the G10 line of materials is not electrically conductive. The G10 is most commonly used in PCB (Printed Circuit Boards) applications. G10 exhibits superior mechanical and dimensional stability and doesn't shrink. Temperature ratings of 180 degrees C. In addition to these properties, G10 has excellent dielectric loss properties, and great electrical strength. G10 is also known as Micarta and Garolite and can be used for structural supports, buss bars, mechanical insulation, gears, test fixtures, washers, spacers and tight tolerance machined parts for electromechanical assemblies. " :D

gundude73: Thanks for clarifying. That is what I assumed. Some vendors are therefore misleading in the descriptions. Still a good deal IMO, I just didn't want to miss a G10 version if one existed.

well, now that that is over with... (spammer)

I agree that the Ontario Rat 1's probably dont come in G10. I bought one knowing that it would be FRN. It was described to have G10 though. I dont think the seller knew any better. It is one of my favorite knives.

The Izula folder should be pretty darn sweeet IMO!

BUT:
The Izula folder is not currently available, whereas the RAT-1 is.
The Izula folder will probably cost 3-6 x as much as a RAT-1.
The RAT-1 is cheap enough to be worth buying, even if you pick up an Izula folder once they are available.

well i have no idea how much the izula folder will be. but i agree that nevertheless the OP should pick a RAT 1 up. for the price they are good.

but i bet it's also going to be 3-6x awesomer too!

Price doesn't necessarily reflect awesomeness, just quality. For example, I think a sebenza isn't 8 times as awesome as an Izula, even though it's 8 times as expensive. The quality however, is.
I'm looking forward to the Izula folder.

The standard RAT 1 handle is made out of "Nylon 6" i e reinforced plastic of some kind. But the "1A" is in G10. And a rough version at that. Can easily compete with Cold Steel in grippiness! :)

Is Nylon 6 the same thing as FRN?
FRN is fiber reinforced nylon while nylon 6 is a particular formulation of nylon. So it may be nylon 6 with fiber reinforcing, or it could be just plain nylon 6 with no fibers
