So I'm planning on picking up the Ontario rat 3 as an edc knife as well as something to throw in my pack when I go backpacking or camping. I'm choosing the rat 3 over the esse 3 because of the slightly thicker blade, and I don't think the price difference compensates for the warranty.

Anyways, I can get it in D2 or 1095 and they're ROUGHLY the same price online. so D2 is more resistant to rust but chips easier whereas 1095 is prone to rust but is less likely to chip.

Edc- opening boxes, slicing through fabrics, cutting through ropes, light prying, breaking down cardboard boxes at my job, as well as slicing through durable my long straps (secure loads to pallet).

When brought backpacking or camping it will mainly be used to obtain kindling, I carry a hatchet for the heavy wood chopping. I tend to make my own tent stakes, cutting through paracord repeatedly, and other menial tasks.

So which steel would benefit my needs in both applications?

The D2 on the Ontario Rat-3 is a FINE piece of metal...it's pretty hard, and may chip easier if you hit something hard, but it holds a monster edge for a LONG time.

While I truly love 1095, I love well-treated D2 much, much more.
