I've seen several people ask about the difference between the RAT-5 and the TAK. Both are 1095. Here are some pics....

The RAT-5 is on the bottom.

RAT-5 is on the left. It looks like the bottom of the knives are not lined up...but they really are.

Chuddy Bear made an awesome sheath for the RAT-5. I had to post some pics of it.

Thanks for the pics.

There isn't much of a difference between them though I would definitely pick the Rat 5 over the Tak.

Really nice sheath btw.

Overall, I would choose the RAT over the TAK as well.

The sheath is.....well....awesome. I showed it to a couple of knife lovers today and they took the knife out...laid it on the table...and admired the sheath for a good 15 minutes.

Thanks for posting those pics. I'd go with the rat-5 also. The deeper choil and grooves on the spine are very nice.

With these side by side pictures (and a TAK in arms reach) i can really see the difference between the TAK and the RAT-5. I like the 5 more and more: not as ugly, sharper tip, more belly, more curve, a real choil (on the TAK there is some steel between you finger and the edge), RAT7 handle, better guard, extra “thumb” grip, scull curser (also easy to remove) so one so one

IMO the 5 really is a improvement of the TAK, but the TAK is more sheeply friendly.

Is the 5 also the official replacement?!

it is actually a strange thing.....i know the RAT-5 is better than the TAK...but I find the TAK in my hand more often then the RAT. I can't explain why...but I do.

Yeah...but the TAK is available in D2. Yeah...Yeah...here we go again...
...I like 1095, too.

I like the looks of the RAT5 a lot better. Its especially nice that it has a usable choil. I"ve never understood why one would put an "almost big enough" choil on a knife -- too small to use, but a waste of blade length.

Isn't the RAT available in D-2 aLso??

MY Gawd, I LOVE D-2!!:) :) :)

Ben

Don't even start the 1095 vs D2 debate...that's been done to death already. :D

The RAT-7 and RAT-3 are available in D2 and 1095....but no D2 for the RAT-5. I really .....really like the RAT-3 with D2.

The RAT team has spun off on their own now, apart from Ontario, they have a new RAT3 clone,[RC-3] 1095 only at this time. It appears to be the only model they have available.

Just to be clear the RAT team will still market production knives made by Ontario, but will also alongside it create a slightly upscale line of similar knives. Check out ratcutlery.com

Too bad the RAT team doesn't get Bob Dozier to make their designs! That would be something worth waiting for!:p

slighty upscale as in....how? the knife i saw listed on the link you referenced didn't look any different than the current rat-3 except for the different colored scales.

I think it will have a different heat treat. Also notice it has a longer handle and a glass breaker pommel. Supposedly, there will be a little more attention to fit and finish as well.

nice......I'll email you my address to send the test knife. :D

ah great, kinda the thread i was looking for

altho

they still seem quite the same, xcept some aesthetical differences

Thanks! I've been looking for hours on eBay etc for pics of these two knives. I'm leaning towards the TAK for an edc in my pack.
