Just got my Ontario RAT-7 delivered. Aside from the edge being terribly lop sided, there is a wavy lighter colored area in the finish all along the edge. I don't have a digicam to post a pic. Does anyone know what would cause this?

thanks

Does it look anything like the line that appears near the rdge on this RAT-7?

I have seen this line near the edge on many coated blades, but am not sure as to the cause.

If the uneven edge bevels are something that you don't feel like fixing and you don't want to live with them, send the knife back to Ontario and have them redo it. That, or contact the place you got it from and see if they will exchange it for you. Make sure to ask them to check the edge on the next knife they send you.

I just got mine. It has the same smoother section on the finish just near the edge. I just took the blade out and battoned it through a few pieces of wood to make some kindling for the fire. It now has a nice used look, with marks from the wood. Smoother section is not so noticeable anymore. I'm going to give the blade a few tests this weekend. Already liking it a lot.

I got my RAT-7 about a week ago and I love it. The somewhat wavy "line" in the blade near the edge is apparent on my RAT-7 also. I thought that it might be differential heat treatment or tempering of the blade to achieve a harder edge and a softer spine.. Looks like the temper line on a katana. Anyone want to jump in with an opinion? I'll see if I can pick it up with some dig. pics and post them.

I think it has to do with how the coating is applied.I dont think it has anything to do with heat treat as I would guess the coating is one of the last steps to the finishing of the blade.I have the RAT7 and have already beat the hell outa it and luv it.Best bang for the buck out there I think.

This is just a guess, but I'd say it is from the buffer used to buff the edge on the knife. The wheel is kissing the coating and polishing it a bit.

Now that I see this explanation, it looks right to me.

Well, thanks Keith! The main reason I got into knife making as a hobby was to learn about knives. It is amazing what you see in a knife once you start creating them from raw materials.
