Ontario Rat Folder new price - same quality?

They sure look the same. I hate what Ontario is trying to pull on the RAT team but I sure love my RAT1 folder. It has been my constant companion since I got it from Jeff when they 1st came out. Awesome design and the materials and workmanship on mine is excellent.

No difference as far as I know, which makes me feel great about paying 70 bucks for mine way back when.

One has a longer blade and phosphor bornze washers. Don't know what the Taiwan made has for washers. Don't know if a slightly longer blade is worth it either. keepem sharp

They are the same--Ontario dropped the price about 6 months ago and the prices are starting to drop. They are very nice. But be aware that they are made in Taiwan

Does that make you wonder if American labor has priced our country out of most world markets???:rolleyes:

And I'll betcha the quality of the Taiwan knife is as good or better than the old ones. If it's any comfort, the Japanese government and labor unions are doing the same thing to Japan.

Went to the Ontario site, and they don't seem to list the knife. Yet some dealers say a satin version is coming soon.

And they still claim a relatinoship with Randall Adventure & Training.

I got one last week. I have to say that it far surpassed my expectations. One of the best values out there right now.

Lock-up on the one I handled last week wasn't the tightest and the thumb-stud is not ambi. All in all, a decent knife for under 30 bucks.

You can switch the thumb stud to the other side.
It still has phosphor bronze washers as far as I can tell
IMO this is the best deal out there.
Even better than a Byrd

If that knife had better steel and wasn't made by one of the least ethical companies in the business (Ontario), it would be an awesome folder. I love the size and ergonomics.

For $70 I would support somebody like Spyderco or Kershaw, both of which give their time and input right here on BF.com.

until ontario start posting pics of survival courses in peru, I'll be on the R.A.T bandwagon.
That is a pretty nice looking folder though, maybe R.A.T can release a better version ;)

I assume you're referring to the ongoing debate between Ontario and RAT. While I cannot attest to that specifically, I can say that I have a few Ontario Knives (a fixed blade made in USA and two folders from Taiwan) and they are an excellent value, even for the old price.

When the lock on one of my RAT-1 folders was defective, I got in touch with Ontario and they were nothing but responsive. They replaced the knife without question. I even sent them my RAT-3 fixed blade and they sharpened it for free.

I don't know enough about the Ontario vs. RAT scenario to properly weigh in, but my experience with Ontario's customer service and product offering has been outstanding thus far.

Can someone post a picture of an Ontario RAT-1 folder made in the USA?

Sorry, I meant to say that I have three Ontario knives, two of which were made in Taiwan (the RAT 1 Folders) and 1 that was made in USA (the RAT-3 Fixed). I'll correct that now.

I'm not sure that Ontario has ever made the RAT 1 Folder in the USA.

Thanks, that's what threw me, I've never seen a RAT-1 that was made in the USA.

Great folder though, I have an early one and it is a great knife. I would love to see RAT come out with something similar in A2 or s30v!

One of the best folders. I like AUS-8 - takes seconds to sharpen.
Knife itself does not look aggressive, like many folders on the market.
Quality is superb.

Yeah sorry about that. I would snatch up one of those knives in S30V in a second though, I'll tell you that.

With BCCl's advice I bought a RAT-1 and glad I did. I prefer it to the Sebbie but just can't put my finger on it. I like the knife, I tell you what. BJ
