What's the story on the Ontario Rat folder? Any good? Any political issues?

Thanks for the advice.

Best value knife around. I have beaten the crap out of mine and it still locks up 100%. Just for fun I batoned with it and it did fine. I have also taken it camping about twice and the edge is still relatively sharp.

I had to buy a second I liked the first so much.

Even got one for my dad on father's day, and he carries it all the time. It influenced him to buy me a knife for no reason at all -to one up me or something, and he is picky about knives.

Darn just when I was about over loosing mine I found this. I guess I'll be up late again going though the car, furniture, boxes, and the rest of the house for the 20th time.

For the price it is awesome. The G10 scales look classy, the four way clip position is great for a lefty like me, and the blade opens with a very loud and satisfying "click!"

Get the black-bladed one because it has double thumb studs instead of a reversible thumb stud, IIRC. Also I heard that the reversible thumb stud is rather course on your thumb.

I have a black and a non-painted blade and they both have the same two sided thumb stud.

I think the reversable thumb studs only came on the older versions of the knife. I have seen them on Ebay.

P.S. my dad is left handed too, I think that is one reason he really liked it.

Any political issues?

Thanks for the advice.

I'm not sure if that particular folder was designed by the 'real' RAT guys...But in any case, you wont get run out of town if you talk about it in the RAT forum...

The RAT designers are very much against anyone holding hard feelings toward Ontario. Most of the pack seems to follow their lead.

I actualy asked paintballer (RAT Sub forum Mod) if mike or jeff were involved in the design of the RAT 1. He thought they were since they were working for Ontario when the knife was put into production.

I don't know how it happened but I ended up with one of these NIB. Stainless blade with double studs. I'm glad to hear that it's a good knife. I was unsure. I do like AUS8 and this one is really sharp out of the box. I love the way it opens. That big heavy blade jumps out like it's on fire. Nice useful blade too. Drop point, full flat grind. Perfect.

It has FRN handles and not g10 like most ads say. That being said it is one of my favorite folders. Just well made with a great blade shape and good weight to the knife and razor sharp. Cheap too. keepem sharp

The rat 1 folder is the only liner lock that I have and there is no doubt that this is one heavy duty folder since it has five bolt holding it together. Looked at both the tenacious and vex, didn't see that attraction everyone else sees. What I liked on rat was that there was definitely more tension or resistance on the liner lock against an open blade. So,when the knife was opened there was a very audible click. The only thing that I do not like about this knife is how the handles lack any traction.

I have EDC'd the RAT 1 regularly for a couple of months now. Have used it for medium duty tasks. If you want to see the full potential, look up Nut'nfancy's vids (stabbing protocol and batoning).

My impressions so far:

- good steel and very versatile blade shape (satin; plain); thin tip may be slightly vulnerable, but makes it ever so useful for slicing and smaller tasks

- most solid liner lock of all the knives I own (lockup sounds like a car door)

- little traction on the scales, but otherwise excellent grip and control because of the placing of the finger choil and jimping

- large, but non-agressive looking; very good machining

- sharpest knife out of the box (sharper than Cold Steel or Spyderco) so far

- a very good bargain knife

Highly recommended!

Like DD said above...great bargain knife.

I have not used mine hard but enjoy playing with it, awesome lock-up.

I have the black bladed model and the coating seems pretty chintzy.
