Ontario / RAT knives?

Anyone have any experience with Ontario / RAT knives, especially the Rat 3 and the model 1 folder? Thinking about buying one of each. Any input?

I have the RAT-7 in D2. Great knife, one of my fav. fixed blades. I am going to get one of the RAT-3's with the Ram horn handle, except only 500 are being made and everywhere I look they are backordered. I would expect the RAT-3 to be just as solid and great as the 7.

Rat 3 is a good utility. I've used it in my brother's backyard, and it worked really well for light chores. It handled some small frozen branches without damage. I highly recommend it.

one thing I forgot, spend the few extra bucks and get the D2, you wont regret it.

I HIGHLY recommend the RAT-3 I have it and I love it. I use it to do small camp chores as well as for butchering game. I have done several deer with it and it holds its edge well(D2 blad). I like the way it handles and I think its priced reasonably. Fits well in my hands and it little bit of filing on the bakc keeps your fingers or thumb from slipping. I have not had any probs with the heat treat which Ontario has had probs with in the past but it seems that the RAT-3 has not experienced these.

Thanks for the comments. Just as a heads up there is a short backorder on new RAT-3s due to D2 steel availability. From our production meeting this week, RAT-3s should be shipping to dealers/distributors by the end of this month. We apologize for the delay but to be honest with you the first production run sold out a lot faster than we anticipated. The RAT-3 and the Model 1 folder are getting a lot of good reviews and we appreciate that. As always, if there is anything we can do to answer questions on our product, feel free to contact us: jeff@ontariorat.com or mike@ontariorat.com

Again, thanks for the comments and for buying our product.

Do you have any info when the RAT 3 Special Edition, with the Rams Horn handles & polished blade, will be released.

Thanks

I enjoy my RTAK a lot. Don't listen to those who tell you about bad QC. Bad ones slip through all the time, but most have never had problems.

I'm planning on adding a RAT-3 and 7 to the collection for outdoor use sometime soon. I've played with a RAT-7 and they feel really good in the hand.

Ontario states that all ram's horn knives, both RAT 3 and RAT 7 will be shipped by the end of this month. Some of the big distributors that ordered first like A.G Russell have already received shipments of knives. I spoke with Ontario today and they said they are still on track to get all remaining ram's horn shipped this month. Sorry it is taking a while but it is happening. They are really nice.:) Holler at me if you need more info and we really appreciate the kind remarks and support for our designs. Mike Perrin

Psychopomp,

Thanks for the support.

In the interest of fair disclosure we had an RTAK returned due to breakage last month. It was one of the first RTAKs we ran. Anyway, we got a new one out to the customer and everyone's happy.

When we initially kicked off the RTAK production we did have some problems, but as you said bad ones do slip through every once in a while. In fact, we report regularly on our forums any problems or issues that crop up with the Ontario RAT line. The bottom line is we're not perfect and we miss delivery dates from time to time and might even have a bad knife slip through production every once in a while, but we always take care of our customers. We may not build the best knife in the world (if there is such a thing), but we'll put our customer service up against anyone in the business. We can't say enough good things about Ontario Knife Co. as a whole (not just the RAT line). Great folks and a great American company.

Now there's a guy/company who sounds one could do serious business with!

i got a RAT-7 a week ago and told myself that was my last knife in a while. But last night i got the "craving" and ordered a RAT-3 because i liked the 7 so much i thought i'd get one for mountain biking for a lighter carry. But i swear this is the last one ;)

I just got a RAT3 D2 the other day, and as the rest of you, I love it. I've also got an RTAK II. My RAT7 D2 and RAT5 1095 are being shipped tomorrow. Can't go wrong with a RAT! And - I've dealt some w/ Mike Perrin from RAT and have never, ever, had better customer service from ANY company, let alone a knife company. These guys are top notch! (By the way, a RAT 3 D2 Rams horn (new) went for $55 on Ebay the other day - I bid on it for a while, but I think someone (smart) put a real high max bid - and no one called him on it!)

I have a RAT-3 and it's a great knife. If I had to complain at all, it would be that the edge is ground past 20 degrees... too obtuse. I reground it to 17 degrees with a 20 degree secondary bevel. Very nice little knife.

I have a RAT 5 and it is (in Aussie) a fucken beauty!
the same day I got it I used it to make fuzz sticks and bash through big logs with a baton, with minor edge upholding, (I'm a butcher so I'm anally retentive about sharp edges), and I'm as happy as a pig in shit.

The only downside I have for Randall Adventure Training (RAT) is that it costs me a packet to do the survival course
