Please do not boot me off the forum for this . . . .
A guy has a D2 Ontario Rat 3 with an R stamped on the handle. Wants to swap for a Buck 102. Anyone have any experiences with the Ontarios. I'm guessing the R is for reject.

i don't know what the R means but i do know that the quality and warranty of their knives are not up to par with rat cutlery.

not as good definately

terrible not at all

I'd always choose a RC over and Ontario but my 7 was a fine tool

RAT Cutlery is better. I have never owned a RAT from Ontario, but the ones I have handled, felt a few leagues below the RAT Cutlery knives.

He's not comparing knives?? I don't have either but the Buck is 420 stainless? I would think the D2 would be a stronger blade?? The Buck doesn't cost to much and if the rat is in good condition and you want it? The rat is smaller? Is that what you want??Why not I would trade if i liked it. new Toy

WJC01:

I have an Ontario made RAT 5 with that R on the handle.
Don't know what it means either, but I haven't had any issues with it:

I've also had in the past a RAT 3 D2 , TAK 1 & a RTAK-all made by Ontario & traded them all away.
This one might be going away soon too.

Because.....
I got THIS one in the mail just this morning & been pounding on it since then:

As has been said many times before , the quality of the Rowan made knives is well worth the little extra money they cost.
It's one thing (and very much appreciated) to read about the differences in quality, fit & finish, sheathing etc. , but when you put them side by side with each other it's real obvious that the RC blades are very much worth the price.

R means it's a reject due to some flaw. Could be simply cosmetic.

Cliff, how did you strip the blade on the RC-4 & RC-3 in the picture you posted?

The RC3 still has the tan coating on it.

The 4 had some of the coating worn off by use.
I stripped the rest off with BIX paint stripper & a razor blade, then used 400-600-1000 grit wet/dry paper to clean it up.

Thanks for replys, I'm clear the RC is superior to the Ontario but he not swapping an RC for a Buck and I doubt any one else would. (Any takers?)If he replies I'm going for the trade. The Buck 102 is a small lightweight knife. My Izula handles those details.

I'd do the swap if it was me then when i decided I liked the style I'd upgrade to a propper RAT :)

Cliff nice collection :)

was wondering is the RC5 a similar grip size to the Ontario ?
