I have made a few MODs to the stock scales on this Ontario RAT 5. The standard scales are flat and has no grain, but with a little burr grinding and finishing with a half round file, the grain comes out beautifully. The file finish is great too (don't use sanding) as the texture gives it a cloth feel allow better gripping. You'll also notice slight valleys between the screws allowing an interesting grain and feel.
One other MODs was to throw out the plastic insert and replace with a leather insert. Quiet and huggs the blade for a nice feel.
I hope to buy a RC-4 next and try a similar MOD on it. What do you think?
-- cheers
