i am trying to find out the width on the ontario rd 9 spine to edge if someone has one could they please measure it i would appreciate it

Its an inch and 5 /8 , i use mine as a beater. Was whackin the spine with a hammer the other day and it took the hits. It tapers from 1/4 to 3/16 at the spine. Are you thinking of buying one?

I beat the hell out the rd9, its def a tough blade. its edge is all mashed back and the spine is rolled. I was curious how much abuse 5160 could take beings I have other blades that use it.

wonder how it compares to sk5 i was thinking about buying cold steel trailmaster v.s ontario r 9 what do you think

its really tip light and therefore not much for chopping, have you checked out the spec plus gen 11 line from ontario? Are you deadset on the rd9? ive got a few big blades in collection from ontario to busse kin i could probably help you decide.

i would say no to the trailmaster it has a poorly designed tang. the rd9 would be a better option regardless of steel because of this design flaw. though i would say 5160 is the better steel for big blades. how much you willing to spend?

I would go with ontario spec plus gen 2 line in this price range. my sp 50 is a better than my rd9. its doesnt have the full width tang but its designed right and aint breakin like a trailmaster

I just picked up a Swamp Rat Rodent 9 for 215, the junglas can be had for that, as well as the Tops power eagle 12 in 5160. The power eagle is a choping and cutting mosnter. The armageddon from Tops chops and splits like no other tho its kinda pricey for plaih 1095. there are cheaper options from condor and others. I plan on picking up a ontario sp53 soon

the sp 50 and 51 are 2 inches wide and have a noticibly thicker spine. the PE12 is almost 2 1/2 wide

For 200 dollars you can nab a Scrapyard 911 (SYKCO 911) made of SR101 steel same as the rodent 9. They are bussekin and you can get it at scrapyardknives.com. The wait time for your order may take a month or 2 though. I had an Ontario RD-9 at one time and it is a very stout knife. But as a chopper, the weight isn't distributed too well and it can function at best a light chopper. Also the handles aren't too ergonomic at all -- they're blocky and uncomfortable. 5160 steel is amazing for chopping though since it doesnt dent as much as 1095 (in my opinion) and can be stropped back to razor sharpness after use.

True Scrapyard is another option, depends on what style, steel, price, and level of fit and finish you like. Custums and Himalayan imports khukri s are can also be had at 200. If you like the all black rubberized handle look Scrapyard and SP GEN 2 line are your best bet, Scrapyard being the little pricier option but worth it. both are made in the U.S.

Sp50 is 1/4" thick, full flat grind. Sp51 is 1/4" thick sabre grind. I have an Sp51 & Sp53. Both are friggin AWESOME ! I prefer sabre grinds.
