What would you buy for general fieldcraft/survival such as shelter building? I carry a leathermann Wave for general purpose cutting.

I usually carry a Tomahawk and a Cold Steel SRK that's about 10 years old, that I used along with the hawk for fieldcraft/clearing light brush, but I'm getting older and want to eliminate I want to elimiate the pair and carry one of the knives above.

The Tomahawk is going to be relegated to the ATV/Jeep and this knife will be what I use away from camp.

I don't have alot of money so who has the best price on them all?

Saw that sheathmechanic.com has the following:
Becker Bowie 9 for $53.95

Ontario 10" RTAK $64.95

Nothing listed for the Brute

Any better prices elsewhere?

Welcome aboard Adirondack. I found my BK9Bowie for $49 + shipping I think at BladeMatrix. Check around I know you'll find it in the forties. I wouldn't even consider anything else at or near that price point. You will be pleasantly surprised at the quality and value. The so-so sheath can be considered a freebie.

Since we're talking about 9" blades here, may I suggest the Swamp Rat Knife Works "Battle Rat"! It's 9.5" blade is similar to the old Busse Basic models and is unbelieveably tough. You can refer to their website for details. It is quite a bit more: $150., but you still might want to investigate it.

Welcome to BladeForums.

I just got a Brute and I love it. A good heavy fixed blade. The sheath is great too, you can position the blade for either right or left hip carry. Nice knife.

If you can't get the Greco, certainly get the Brute! Greco's are tuff. peroid

I went with the Becker 9. It's a little more versatile than the Brute. The main thing to me is that you would be hard pressed to find a better cost to product ratio than what is found in the 9. I hope you enjoy whatever you decide to purchase.

IMHO people will tell you get the BK9 because of the price diff between the Brute. IMHO the Brute is the more versatile for several reasons the sheath and the anvil being two of them. The anvil could serve as a hammer in a pinch. Like I said before get the Greco if you can, if you can't get the Brute.

Average where is this deal located?

Also I'm aware of the swamprat website, I just can't afford it right now, I'm layed off and money is tight.

Right now I'm leaning toward the Brute, I've had the Ontario SP series fighter, and loved the ease in sharpening, that's why I mentioned the RTAK. How are the Becker knives, and this Greco kife to sharpen?

(I use a Lansky sharpener that's 20 years old and still going strong)

Here's Greco's address, Greco Knives. Like I said try and get that, if not Brute!

When I had my Becker Crewman it sharpened with ease! I use a DMT duofold and sharpmaker white stones. I have had 3 Grecos and I used to get those hair popping sharp on the Sharpmaker.

Don't let a price sway your opinion. Don't settle for less.

Don't buy a knife because of a price, buy a knife for what it is. Brute is exactly what it is. The BK-9 is a watered down version, accept no subsitutes.

Greco's site comes up, but when I go to any of the various prices all I get is a blank screen! Does anyone have a picture of the Greco Xplorer?
