Ontario SP2 vs 499?

Anyone have any specific comments on the Ontario SP2 vs he 499? Is the SP2 their "showcase" version of the 499? The main differences I see are the leather grip and steel buttcap. I get the sense that the 499 reflects changes the military wanted to make the knife more useful.

I am looking at this as a general utility survival knife for camping and hiking. I also have a seal pup elite (straight edge) and am looking at the Becker BK9 for larger tasks.

I consider the SP2 or 499 as a "starter" knife that will see serious abuse, in part due to my inexperience.

Comments on 499 vs SP2 are much appreciated!

499 has been around a long time. Ontario now has several versions of many traditional mil-spec knives that have either a kraton handle SP2, Kraton with steel butcap SP25, or threaded steel butcap such as the Freedom Fighter series. They are excellent tools for the price IMO.

Thanks! Looks like the SP25 is out of production but may be available at some retailers.

A couple more specific questions:

How often does one actually pound on the buttcap with this size knife? I could see breaking glass with it if no other blunt object was at hand...

Is there any benefit to a steel guard and shape of the 499 compared to the SP2/SP25 kraton?

I may be splitting hairs and should just toss a coin at this point...

I think the leather handled version has more character. The SP2 also has a different blade coating. If you are just looking for a good blade, the 499 is the way to go. If you want the space age materials you can go the other direction. This is all assuming that the only difference is the handle and guard materials, which given my experience is the only difference.

The hexagon butt of the 499 dug into my hand. Bugged my so much I started a rehandle project. If I could do it over again I'd get the FF2. Same blade, longer handle. YMMV
