What is your opinion on theOntario sp2
It looks like it could be a good survival knifw but is it stout enough for battoning ?

i just have a 499 , very sturdy and strong , i think 499 & sp2 both are simliar when talk about the strengh .

not too hard ,man.

there are some merchants in China who do importing knives, but normally the price is not friendly .

I've carried an SP2 while hiking and backpacking for about 20 years now. Haven't batoned with it yet but would not hesitate to do so.
(haven't had a camping fire in about that many years )

Sharpened the forward swedge area which makes an awesome expendable surface for scraping the magnesium off the magnesium block in the mag block/ferro rod combo device for fire starting. Have been experimenting with techniques for the using the block efficiently.

Majority of my use of the SP2 was actually as a cathole digger. But it has been there as backup in case of needing to cut a splint, or crutches or fend off a mountain lion.

It's a little heavy but.... comforting to have.

Another note- if you want a kydex sheath for the SP2 a kydex sheath for the full sized Kabar fighting knife (about $15) will fit perfectly except that the sheath is longer than necessary.

I've seen conflicting info on whether the smaller sized fighting knife sheath will accept an SP2. I don't have one of those knives (Kabar Small Black) myself to test with.

My SP2 has ridden in the original sheath thru lots of bushwhacking. The rubber knife handle shows some scraping from pushing thru scrub oak thickets but the sheath is fine. But the sheath is kind of tucked up under my pack. The rolled section of closed cell foam padding I always carry has taken a lot more damage from the trail.

After handling my collection this past weekend I realized my statement that the SP2 will fit in a Kabar kydex sheath might not be correct.
The current KB kydex sheaths retain with a strap and a clip action of the kydex on the blade guard.
The one I was referring to has two snap straps and no plastic retention feature. (obtained probably 15 years ago)

For the record.

Another entry for the record. The current Kabar plastic sheath will accept my 1993 SP2. The blade is thicker than the Kabar so it's a friction fit down the blade but the sheath's locking feature is not a barrier to fully seating the SP2. The handle snap strap goes around the SP2's handle just fine.

So a guy with an SP2 can use the Kabar plastic sheath. Available for about $15.
