I've been looking for a somewhat cheap all around camp knife, and I came across the Ontario SP43. Looks like its pretty much exactly what I want, a nice cheap knife that will baton and chop.
How does 5160 compare to 1095?

This is the one I'm looking at by the way.

5160 has a bit better edge-retention and is also a little "less tougher" than 1095. As long as it's heat-treated right, 5160 is still a very tough performer.

Personally, I would consider it a couple steps up from 1095 in the carbon steel range.

Sounds good, thanks man.

Actually, I believe it's just the opposite. It has less carbon than 1095, with a little added chrome. It should be a bit tougher, but not quite as wear resistant. 5160 has been used in big choppers traditionally. It's the one that they make car and truck leaf springs out of.

They are both good, and both make excellent knives. Ontario finally came out with the Ranger series too, and the bigger choppers in that are 5160, the smaller, slicing, cutting styles are 1095.

BTW, I have that knife you have pictured. It's nice. I haven't given it any hard use yet though. Look through the rangers too. There is another page of them listed with those in the link. Be sure to look at page 1 also. Joe

OK sounds good it would definitely be nice to have a tough chopper.
I will definitely check out the rangers from what I have heard they are damn good knives.

5160 is definitely tougher than 1095 because of its content of silicon, which classifies 5160 as a spring steel. For a big knife like the SP43 it is a great choice.
Yep it does sound that way, thanks for the help guys.
