Hello,

I was wondering what everyone here thought of the Ontario Spec Plus knives. I know from Ontario's website that they use 1095 Carbon Steel in these knives and I was wondering how it performs. Let me say that I'm definitely not the type to spend very much money of a fixed blade knife as I don't use them often but I do need a couple of strong inexpensive fixed blades to keep around for some heavy duty outdoor work. Let me know what you think.

Good for that use as are the Kabar heavy bowies....don't leave out the Ontario Machetes either.

I have an Ontario Marine Raider Spec plus, I've only owned it for about a week now, but i took it out last weekend and split some wood and did some chopping with it. No visable damage so far, but the finish on the blade is pretty scuffed up. Its similar to the Ka-Bar large heavy bowie, different blade shape of course, and the Ontario is thicker and of coruse heavier too. The blade finish on the Ka-Bar is much better, scuff-wise anyway. And prices are comparable. Anyway, i know i just kinda went on a little rant there and you didnt mention anything about large knives........
I own a Navy Spec Plus as well, its the same quality as the Marine Bowie, but it has a satin finish on it, so no problems there, theres a little rust issue if you dont take care of it, but a little oil fixes that problem.

Great choice. I have an Ontario Spec-Plus Survival Machete. There was an ice storm and the woods behind my house had a great deal of fallen and split limbs. I cleared a couple of truckloads with the Ontario and a chain limb saw. The survival machete is much heavier and has a thicker blade than a regular machete so it's a chopper. Worked great and sharpened easily. As was mentioned, you should keep the blades lightly oiled, and the coating does wear off where scuffed. Still good using blades.

I have found the Spec plus series to be good value for the money. My personal favorite is the Survival Bowie. Mine has "survived" over six years of heavy yard work, chopping limbs, slashing palmettos, spitting kindling. It used to be my "go to" knife for camping, until I got the RTAK II. I once had their Marine Raider, but found it to be less versatile and a bit heavy. The real Marine Raider (Collins #18) is much lighter. The Ontario 12" camp machete is a real winner, too.

I use the SP16 SPAX in the high mountains of Afghanistan (8,000-14,000) right now for snow and ice. It serves us well. It is a great ice scrapper.

I have been reworking an sp10, and hope it will hold up to field use when finished. havin to spend a lot of time removing the black. anybody know a quick way?
