Was thinking about using one of these as a chopper I like the look and the size and the blade seems thick enough to be baton friendly...Any thoughts??

I have a plain jane Ontario machete in 1095. Had it for 20+ years.
I've hacked, chopped, cut, even used it for slicing sod.
It has a few blade knicks, but that's from blatant total abuse.

ontario spec plus machete

I have one---Try it first before you get one.

It's ok----but not good enough to reccommend

I use their 18" U.S. issue sawback machete and it is great. The spec plus is 1/4" 1095 if I remember correctly. I have their raider bowie wich is 1/4" and it is a heavy knife. I looked at one in a case the other day and frankly I wasnt impressed enough to ask to look at it. I think I would rather have the Becker Tac-Tool. They are pretty close deminsion wise. Just remember with Ontario you get so-so quality control and a lot of times unequal or poor grind lines. I have 9 ontario spec plus knives and I would say only 30% of them came shaving sharp with proper edge geometry. A diamond stone fixes this though. Reangle the grind and you have a wicked sharp knife for a great price. I would recommend you buy from a knife shop and inspect the actual knife you are getting. If you mail order you take the risk of getting one of the poorly ground ones. Hope this helps.

If you don't mind doing some work yourself to modify the handle and put a proper cutting edge on the knife, the line is a good value. I'd go with a larger model, the smaller ones don't seem to fill any particular outdoors role. Too small to really chop and clear trails, too big to be used as your main slicer. Hence my SP1 sits unused 99.99% of the time I go outside. Also, if you plan on batoning with it, don't get one with a sharpened top edge. I've bashed mine on rocks to flatten it some but it still eats up the baton anytime it's used like that.

Seems like noone that owns this model is particularly impressed with it, I might just go with one of the ontarion 12 inch camp machetes, but I can only find them with the D-guard...Does that get in the way when chopping??? I might have to remove it so I don't feel like a pirate....YAARGH

I like the D guard but it takes some getting used to. it does save your knuckles. Go with the plain blade for the 12 inch I have the "clip point" and it really has no purpose except to weaken the tip.

check out some of the testing videos on this site they seem really solid for the price.

I like the feel of the Camp knife but my experience with it is limited to fondling we havent gone " all the way" to chopping.

I understand..what it's like to not wnat to rush into things...You've got to get to know eachother first...Thanks
