I was looking for a knife which i could use for fishing, which may or may not result in my knife coming in contact with salt water, and this knife looked perfect, however when i saw that the blade material was 1095, a question popped into my mind. Why wouldnt a knife made for the navy be made out of stainless steel (one form or another)??

I don't know the answer but did look at Ontario's website and some knife retailers.

There is another Ontario Navy "military" model that is more expensive and is made from 440A stainless steel.

"USN" is part of their catalog number. It has nothing to do with the Navy. If you look at their web site, it does not identify that knife as being "Navy", but rather for survival and military.

Well i assumed that if "navy" was used as part of the knife's description, they had the navy in mind when they started making them lol. but you have a good point. i just always thought that when youre around salt water, stainless is a better choice if you dont have time to keep your knife clean.
