As I am in the process of a BOB outfitting I was wondering if I should go with a machette or will my Ontario Spec Plus be OK? If a machette then which one without going crazy ($60~80)

It doesent seem to hold a good edge long but it chops reasonably well when I have used it on camp trips. Does anyone have anything REALLY bad to say about this knife as I know they aren't that well though of but for the $ they seem an OK buy.

Do you want something that performs "OK" or something that you know will perform in a survival situation. You may be able to reprofile the edge to get better performanceat note, check into the Kabar Cutlass machete. This thing can get scary sharp and will hold it's edge.

I had a Spec Plus knife and I found it to be way to heavy for what I wanted to use it for. It makes a good replacement for a hatchet but I prefer something a little lighter for all around chores and something longer for cutting my way through vegitation. Currently the knives in my BOB are a Benchmade Balisong 42 ($125) for a tough reliable folder that won't fold back on my hands in a crisis, a 12" Cold Steel Bushman ($10) for all around camp work, (nice and cheap), and a Junglee short sword ($80) for possible defense and machete work.
