 I'm not a military man or a knife fighter, but when in the woods hiking, camping, hunting, etc., I like having a large fixed blade knife, mainly for utility purposes and maybe for just a little extra piece of mind. For the most part, combat/fighting/tactical knives fill the bill nicely. For the most part I agree that you get what you pay for, but I decided to try the Ontario Tak and RAT 7, both in D2 steel. Wow! No, I don't work for Ontario, but I feel like I got a lot more than I paid for. If you use knives like I do, check them out. You'll get a good working knife and can put the money you save towards that custom blade you've been wanting. They don't carry any prestige or snob appeal, but don't be surprised if you find yourself grinning like an idiot while you're using one. Just had to share this, sorry for the length of the post.

their frontiersman (properly sharpened) makes one hell of a bush trimmer... wouldnt trust my life or safety on it, but its good as a small machete....

Both those knives- they have decent reputation and users who trust them here on forums, I would personaly prefere those 2 in 1095 for better toughness.
Ontario heat treating many people blieve is inconsistent, some of there knives can be very good where other knives of same model are too brittle or too soft. ymmv -

It is the inexpensive line of Ontario knives that has the bad reputation. Those made in collaboration with knifemakers and survivalists are much better quality.

Yeah, I tried some of the cheaper ones years ago. Thats why I thought long and hard before trying these. Maybe the micarta handles were a flag saying "we wouldn't put micarta on a bad knife" to me. I don't know, but I'm impressed with them for the money spent.

From a materials standpoint, my TAK would seem very similar to the swamp rat safari skinner. Don't know about the quaility, only time will tell, but so far, so good.

I got a TAK in D2 last week, I only paid $59.00 Dollars for it, for the money it is a great knife. Fit and finish is perfect, if the heat treat on the D2 is good it is worth more than $59.00 Dollars.

I have an Ontario Military Issue, Air Force Survival Knife in my collection, it looks good and I would imagine it could be used for a fighting knife, if for no more than knocking someone out with the butt of the knife. If I were to look for a good camping, hiking, hunting knife it would be a Camillus, Ka-Bar or a Buck.
