Other than blade length, handle material and sheath material what are the differences (if any) between the various Ontario survival knives in the $40-50 range? Seems they are all U.S. made and 1095 steel.

Is one better than another?

Tried a search but didn't find much info on this question.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Do you mean Spec plus("black") line? If so, there are no differences - just the shape.

Spec Plus, Survival,Freedom Fighter... They all seem pretty much the same except as noted.

Are there any real differences or just personal preference?

Balance and ergonomics, really. The bolt knife is extremely handle-heavy, and never had one come clean and functional from the factory. Most need a good amount of filework to achieve a respectable edge. The Spec Plus line comes with better fit and finish from the factory.

guess ida pretty much nailed.
but why would the cutlery industry continue to produce knives of various forms and designs?
if only because such industrious enterprise actually thinks it can or has improved the overall basic cutting ability of the first knives ever made!
but getting back to the original question...
yes, it appears to be for purely cosmetic reasons in the area of ergonomics rather than improved cutting ability.
