I need a new outdoors knife for Camping, Canoeing, Hiking and general survival use. I really like the Ontario TAK!! My question is should I be looking at D2 or 1095 steel?? This knife may double as a hunter/skinner down the road. Are you still able to batton and pry with D2?? Which is the better steel for my needs?? Sorry I meant TAK in the title...

I have the TAK in 1095. Consider it if you will be doing some field sharpening, much easier than D2. 1095 will rust if left to its own devices. I can tell you that my 1095 takes and keeps a very nice edge. The TAk-1 in 1095 is well worth the $$$ Time for the D2 people to chime in.

Thanks for the post. The TAK is certainly gonna be my next knife!! Anyone else have any opinions??

I bought an Ontario RAT 7 in 1095. Its an excellent knife i highly recomend them. I believe 1095 to be a tougher steel in a 7" blade particularly for chopping. However if i bought a RAT 3 or a TAK it would be in D2 particularly as it would see less choppinfgand more use as a hunting/skinning knife. The RAT team have an excellent product replacement policy, one of the best.

I have the Rat7 in D2 and the Rat3 in D2 as well. I really like the bite that the D2 has especially on these knives. It has held up well to small camp chores which included small log splitting, and shaving of bark. I'd like to try one in the 1095. I used the rat3 as a skinner and a boning knife in a pinch.

I have a RAT-7 in 1095 and it has proven to be an excellent tool. I also have a TAK-1 in d2. When I received the TAK-1 it had the worst wire edge I have ever seen, but after cleaning it off it too has proven to be a great knife, skinned several deer and many many coyotes with the TAK just to prove that I could, have not had to sharpen it yet. For me, D2 is the only "stainless" I use in a knife blade.
