I'm thinking about getting myself an Ontario TAK in 1095 carbon steel. I've never owned a fixed blade or carbon steel blade before...the closest I've come is a D2 CUDA EDC. Does anyone here own this knife and would like to comment on it? It seems pretty nice and the price is right, but I'd like to hear a little bit more about it from the "real world" before I lay down my $60.

P.S. I'm also interested in seeing some pictures if anyone has any available to post.

Thanks.

If you're not sure if you want to take care of a Carbon Steel knife, you can always pick up a cheaper knife and use it for a while. Opinels are great folders to have around and very handy... Dexter Russell and Ontario's Old Hickory lines are also great fixed blade speciments to "cut" your teeth on... Now, a finished blade will be more resistant to discoloration than the bare steel of those knives, but using them will be a better litmus test for how you treat your knives.

If you do a search here on the Ontario TAK you'll find a number of posts that have discussed this knife.

I just got my TAK today in the mail. I love the look of the knife, the zinc phosphate finish is a nice and even matte black that compliments the green canvas micarta handle slabs. The grind is a little uneven but that doesn't really bother me that much because I'm not an obsessive-compulsive perfectionist like some other board members :D.
I went out back and messed around with a couple 2x4s and the blade is still just as sharp as it came. The finish shows no signs of being used. While I was chopping I noticed that the handle seemed a little bit too big (I have medium-sized hands) but this might be an advantage to someone wearing work gloves since it leaves a little extra space for the glove material to go.
I'll post some pictures as soon as I get a chance--the digital camera is not at home right now.
