The online pictures really don't capture the essence of this knife.

A friend of mine who is in the US Army Reserves just returned from Iraq. He showed me a knife that was given to him while he was there. It was the Ontario XM1 in gray.

He said it was given to him as an evaluation knife.

The first thing I noticed is that it's much thicker than it appears in photos, but it is one hell of a well made knife.

I liked it so much , I'm going to buy one of those and the Retribution II which is made by the same Italian company ( I believe Fox).

I think the XM1 is a great knife.

I have XM-1 and I think it is a great knife.
I don't like camo XM, but the black one is very nice.

Very high quality folder. Came razor sharp. I carefully took the knife apart just to check it out. Build quality is awesome. No play anywhere, extremely smooth. I never really cut anything with it other than paper, so I can't say much about the blade performance.

This folder is not for everyone. It is very thick. Both blade and handle are twice thicker than on a regular folder. It seats very comfortably in hand, but it is not for jeans pocket carry. It's place in the backpack or somewhere on the vest. You can carry it in a loose pants, but I would imagine it won't be very comfortable.

This knife handles very like a fixed blade. As a folder, the closet comparison that I've had is Buck Strider (real Strider is in a different class). Now, keep in mind that beauty is in the eye of beholder.... I like XM more, I think it is better built than a buck and it feels better in my hand.

When buying XM-1, think about what you buying it for. If it is just for collection, then you probably will like it a lot. It is very unusual, and has that cool factor. If you think that you will carry it as a main EDC, then you might be disappointed due to the size of this tank.
To me it's place is not in edc rotation. It is in the combat zone, great outdoors, in a collection or in a backpack as a brag piece just show it off to you friends or maybe a back up blade for a time then you suddenly need to destroy an enemy armor or a bunker with a knife.

i disagree my zero tolerance 301 is substantially heavier and it carries quite well.

Thanks to everyone for their reply. It helped me to know how thick it was. While this knife does look great, i will need to carry it. So my search continues, thanks again:)

This thing is awesome, built like a tank and yes it's thick but there's also a slimmer version of it...I EDC mine without a problem but you won't forget it's in your pocket. Cheers!!!!

I' ve not handled this folder in person. But from what pics I' ve seen, the liner lock appears quite thin/ flimsy and out of porprtion to its respective scales. For a folder this large and its marketed intended purpose(s), a thicker liner would make more sense. I' d be more than happy to hear of its use in the field.

i have two of these...pe dark model.

these are extremely well-built knives. everything stated above is very true; thick, probably not best for edc, etc.

in fact, i picked mine up very cheaply; no one seemed to know a darn thing about them, being from italy they use the same steel as extrema ratio N690c so i figured that was a good starting place.

i emailed extrema ratio and ontario to try to find out who the partner was re: the production.

no word from ontario, ever....extrema ratio italy AND usa responded.

they have never partnered w/ ontario, but they consider ontario a very fine company.

did not learn much, but at least the italian boys responded, and very professionally i might add.

it's an expensive product (extrema) but they do seem to care at least.

I'm pretty sure they're made by Fox Cutlery ( Italy).
