I've been looking at the afghan, ready detachment, spec plus, rat, etc. for hard use. I have only owned a rat 1 from ontario, so I don't have a clue how the quality and durability of there fixed blades are. Do they chip easily, break easily, dull easily? And how is there customer service? I like there look an they seem good for the prices. Any help will appreciated, thanks.

Don't know about their customer service, but their SP line of fixed blades are very good knives, and you can find plenty(and I mean PLENTY) of examples of their durability and sturdiness on Youtube.

Ok, thanks, I love the rd7 and the sp10 marine raider Bowie.

The RD line are bombproof tanks. The finish isn't immaculate, but who cares. They are designed by an Army Ranger to do what Rangers do....beat the bejeebus outta stuff.

If you want to do that, they cannot be beat for price/destruction ratio.

I have the RD7 I can't imagine what I could do to hurt it. Quarter inch 5160. Sheaths are so so but the value is good.

I have the RD7, RD9 and afghan bush. They are unbreakable IMO. I originally only owned the RD7 but after all the hard use I put it through with no damage to the knife's integrity, I had to buy the others. Great knives

I own a boat load of Ontario knives. I have batoned with all but one (RD6 Signature Series in 3/8" S7 tool steel). No issues at all. There is nothing wrong with quality. There were 2 people that had Blackbird SK5's that broke. Bad heat treat. (Ontario usually uses 1095 or 5160 & they have the heat treat on that down to a science, the SK5 is 154CM & prob the first time they used it.) They were replaced by Ontario. The RD series is 1/4" thick. Pretty bomb proof unless you throw you knives. I do NOT throw my knives. Buy with confidence my friend. :D

SP-2, SP-8, SP-10, SP-17, SP-47, SP-51, SP-53, SP-KUKRI. Ontario RD6 Signature Series. Ontario 18" machete, 12" machete, SS folding GI pocket knife.

I've seen a lot of mixed things about their heattreat. For one they run 1095 pretty soft and I've heard of a lot of broken/chipped blades from them.

I have beaten the hell out of my Ontario Marine Raider SP10 and no chips,cracks....nothing. I think the thing is bomb proof!

Had a Rat 5 for 2 years and used it really hard, never hurt the thing in the slightest. The sheaths leave a lot to be desired as most production sheaths do, I think youll be fine.

if they aren't tempered properly

Tempering allows steel to bend before breaking. It removes hardness.

So a improperly tempered tempered blade might be hard, not soft. A hard blade might chip.

So, are these blades you are seeing too hard or too soft?

I'm confused.

I had a RD-4 a few years back when they were made by Ranger (Justin).

The thing was a solid chunk of steel no doubt, I was VERY surprised to see it do so poorly when tested by the NOSS destruction test guy.

I realize that those tests are to be taken w/ a grain of salt but still...

I've since moved away from 1/4 inch thickness, the slightly thinner blades IMO are just as tough when treated properly and they cut better.

I owned several Ontario blades, including the RD Spike Hawk and two of the older Spec Plus big knives. They've proven to be tough as the day is long. There's not a thing I can do (within reason) to destroy them, and they will last a lifetime with minimal care. There are other offerings at similar price points, but Ontario provides excellent value.
