Am looking for a hunting knife. When I say hunting I do not mean to skin or process but to stab with and to kill with.

I feel the Ontario SP6 is a good choice to achieve what I want. Any comments on the sp6 or any better suggestions.

Knife hunting use to be pretty common. You would realise your dogs and let the dogs wear out the game then you sent in your best dogs to hold the game then you go in with your hunting knife/dagger and finished the game. Some used spears.

What's a really good hunting knife?

Plenty of baddies been stabbed by Ka-Bar's over the years.. don't imagine the SP6 should have a problem poking holes in a hog...

The Fox Mars sputnik and Viper Fate are both great knives. The Fox maybe a little short though (6"). Although a bit more coin.

Nearer the price the Svord pig sticker?

I would throw the Buck 651 Nighthawk Hunter into the mix. Literally designed for hog hunting.

SP-6 should be fine, it's basically a slightly modified Randall No 1 fighting knife design.

Without getting into specific models, the basic premise for a good large game hunting knife has simply been large blade 6-7-12", thick stock, good grip.

Larry Harley, who guided boar hunts, thought this was a near perfect design for it -

Henry Shakespear, who did tons of hunting particularly in Asia liked these designs -

In Germany it was variations of the Hirschfanger for many years -

Now a lot of guys use surplus bayonets or pipe knives (See below) in addition to those -

In Europe, beefed up bowie designs had their day -

In Australia, they use a lot FDick sticking knives as mentioned above.

The Gerber Mk II was a favorite in Hawaii for a while.

Lots of ways you can go on it.

Ruari Ruari , I didn't know they still made that knife! I had one and it was stolen a few years back. Tough as nails, well balanced, excellent grip (those little knobs do a lot!) and it was a favorite. Looks now like it is discontinued. But at the right price, it would be a great choice.

I had a guy that worked for me that did "pig stickin' " and he showed me his favorite knife. It had been made for him in Arkansas where he was from at someone's backyard forge. It looked like a really skinny Roman short sword, about 16 - 18" long, and sharpened like a double edged dagger for maximum cutting and destruction. The handle was was about 5 inches, the rest was blade. According to him, the farther away you can get from an angry hog the better off you are. I agree.

Hogs are now considered a nuisance animal here in Texas and have had an open season and limitless harvest for a few years now. They are tough, meaner than hell, strong as an animal 5X their size and really, really quick. No thanks on getting "tusked" by one of those. I am fine with my 30 '06, 30/30, or my .223. I don't mind an up close coup de grâce. I don't like to watch an animal bleed out, struggling and fighting for its life. It takes a long, painful time for some animals to bleed out from stabs or other injuries, even when you know what you are doing. Not my style.
