Apparently accuracy is an issue :D:D

Oh well, it was time for a new haft anyway.

Man that's unfortunate, did that a couple times myself.

I would really like to see more pictures of that rectangle handled hawk, that looks really interesting.

Hi there Kenny. I forged the through the haft hawk from a wide old chisel, the "tang" that is inside the haft is narrower than the blade side and the spike side so that the shoulders stop the head from moving back or forward. It's a feather and sharp as a chisel as you can see by the way it went through the haft. I've been throwing it very hard to see if the head and handle will stay together, so far after 200 or so throws it's still tight. I'll post pics after dinner of it and a couple more that I made up.

Best regards

Robin

Here are a few pics of the through the haft hawks I've been making.

I just HATE IT when that happen's-time for the DUCKT TAPE
Hey Steve, great to see you out of the shop for a change. I'm afraid that duct tape just ain't gonna do it this time, spent all evening carving a new haft. Take care my friend.

Mannn I love those so much, they remind me of the native american stone tomahawks, but fused with a french trade hawk, know what I mean?

I'll have to give a shot at making one some day.

Hey Kenny, when you're ready to make one I can send you a drawing of how I do the "tang" shoulder on the head. Glad you like them.

Robin

That would be great pipeman, my email's in my contact info on my profile. I have some old rasps down at the shop, I want to learn how to anneal anyways.

Aye, me as well. I would think a simple triangle would do fine for that design, make a functional balanced spike in addition to a lighter weight head.

I've made three of this style hawk and I really think the trick is to build shoulders on the head in front of and behind the haft so it won't move when it hits. The biggest one has the widest shoulders and it throws and sticks beautifully.

So do you split the wood at the top and slide the head down into the hawk or you dremel out a slot and slide the head in spike first?

Hey Kenny
They are Ash hockey stick handles split down the middle then I chisel the slot out to fit the 'tang" perfectly, then epoxy the handle "slabs" back together. So far I have thrown the bigger one well over 200 times with the usual number of bad hard hits and it's hanging together well. I've seen other guys pin the head with iron pins but this seems to work very well. It sticks deep so I think in future i'll put some leather on the head end of the handle to pry it out of the tree or target without wearing the haft. The biggest drawback is rehafting if it breaks although in reality I think it's easier than a started from scratch standard handle.

Oh wow cool, I actually have some hockey sticks and epoxy, sounds like I have everything I need. Did you actually anneal your files/rasps before forging them or did you do this entirely by stock removal?

Kenny
I was messing around on a friends forge, just threw the chisel into the coal and when it was hot enough I pounded it :D Mainly thined the edge and built up the shoulder by forging. After I groud it I heated it to cherry red and quenched the edge and spike in oil. I have Noooooo idea what i'm doing but it seams to be working out so far:D Just building my forge and should be bashing hot steel very soon.
