Ooops with traditionals

I have been a knife fanatic most of my life. For the longest time I collected and used locking folders of the more modern design. Every once in a while, while sharpening or not paying attention I would nick myself but it wasnt too often....fast forward to my traditional transition.

It seems that I cut myself more often with my traditionals. It seems that strong spring snaps and my obsession with having all my knifes as sharp as I can possibly get them has caused some of these mishaps. Interestingly the one that bites me the most (which isnt too often...lol!) is my Hay'n Helper.

So, who here cuts themselves on a semi-regular basis?

Did it last night. Belly of the main (clip) blade of a Colonial Ranger Lg. jack caught my finger upon closing. The thin stock 1075 cut like a razor blade. This seems to be my most common type of injury. Goes with the hobby, I'm afraid.

I do (raising my hand, nicked/cut/still-healing fingers, Band-Aids and all). :D

I stupidly cut myself a few days ago, when experimenting with a small ignition file to sharpen a 1095 blade on a Moore Maker folder (Note to self: if the file is narrower than the finger tip, attempting to support said file with said fingertip can be dangerous, as the flesh tends to wrap around the edges of the file).

That being said, a cut finger always provides the immediate proof-positive feedback that whatever I'm doing, is indeed working. :o

I have a tendency towards nicks and the like. I think part of it is because I have large hands, but prefer small knives like the peanut. But, to be truthful I cut myself most often closing a knife, or while cleaning/oiling a blade and it goes right through the paper towel into my hand. Maybe I should keep my knives a little on the duller side ;)

Every knife I've ever carried had bit/cut me, I cut myself an average of once a week, usually just a nick but enough time I've needed a few stitches to close the wound.

Having been in the trades for nearly 40 years I use a knife constantly, when I was working out want unusual to pull out from my pocket to cut something 30-40 times a day.

To me a knife ain't mine till it's tasted my blood. ;)

This was about a week ago. Often happens when I'm using an inappropriate knife for the job, but I'm determined not to carry two knives every day, because two will become three, then four and I know I'll wind up with a man bag or something hideous to house my obsession.

ha, man bag...so true.

My hands tend to be a mess of cuts and scraps, not normally from knives but it happens, mostly it's when shaping and sanding knife scales, beads and such, go figure.

I have had a couple of good ones in the past. One from about 20 years ago when I was using a Klien Electrician's knife to turn some screws that it shouldn't have been turning. The liner lock failed and cut me at my little finger joint on the bottom of my hand. Parts of the hand are a little numb from time to time, and if I hit it in the right spot, it hurts like hell..... I still have that knife though. I still get nicked on occasion, but nothing too bad. I'm a lot more careful these days.

I carry a BOB/Man Bag, in it I keep my wallet, pistol, first aid kit, tinder box with flint and steel, lock picks, meds, flashlights, Nintendo 3DSI, phone, Palm pilot (yea I know step into the present and get a smart phone), Leatherman, para cord, diamond hones, keys, lighted magnifier, harmonicas, book, kindle fire, lighters, Cosmic Wimpout and knives....

I didn't think that I had that many in there but when I added them to the 4 in my pocket, they totaled 28, 3 fixed blade and 25 folders ranging in length from a 1" blade to a 4" fixed blade and everyone's rates my blood at least once.

I have a serious problem. :)

I cut myself regularly with traditionals, mostly when testing a newly sharpened edge on my arm hair. Its a distinctively burning cut that comes when I drag the edge wrong, the pain of which I have learnt to associate with a good edge.

The worst cut I ever got was actually from a SAK, I was idly practicing my OHO technique on a Friday night after a few beers, pure stupidity, I still have enough fingers left to play violin though.

My experience has been just the opposite. I rarely cut myself with slipjoints. It would happen to me more often with a modern knife when flicking it open and shut. I'm pretty focused on what I'm doing while actually using or maintaining a knife, and that extra care helps avoid accidents.

I do have an odd knack for getting cut by things that you would never expect to even be able to cut someone.

I think pretty much every knife I own has given me a little love nip at least once, usually when first getting acquainted. Once she gets that first kiss out of the way, well then she's my gal forever. Once in a while one will get frisky and give me a second peck, but by then I usually learn her ways and learn the proper amount of respect and we get along fine after that.

I get worse accidental scratches from my cats.

Wow! Just the act of sticking your hand in there could be hazardous to you health! Except for the gun, and the knives, it sounds like my wife's purse. Now don't read anything into that, I am just comparing bags, and their contents. Come to think of it, I guess she is ready to Bug Out at any moment, probably without me if she reads this post.

Blessings,

Omar

Man bag... Heh I gave thought to a messenger bag that I found in TJ. It was actually pretty cool, but I just couldn't do it. On the other hand, as I write this I have my SOG multi and Fenix flash on my hip, as well as 4 knives distributed amongst my various jeans pockets. The worst thing is when my pockets are full of knives and I've got to go somewhere. I really have a problem with putting anything else in a pocket with a knife because it might scratch it.

I must be very careful, or very lucky. I don't ever cut myself, well except for a tiny stick with a carving knife that went through my kevlar glove. Outside of that, nope, not in recent memory, although I have noticed that I'm far more careful with the slippies. I've been trying to one hand open and close them though... Probably not wise!

"on a semi-regular basis"? Not me.

I occasionally get distracted when working with a blade and get nicked. But, it is an infrequent occurrence and happens no more frequently with traditional patterns than it does with moderns.

I seem to go quite a while between nicks, then two or three in a row and I learn my lesson for a while...earlier this week I put my Schrade 190T on the kitchen counter while peeling some potatoes...reached to grab it while distracted nicked my right thumb....I put it down to grab a band aid....then reached with my left hand to pick it up because i moved down the counter while band aiding...and nicked the left thumb....I should be good to go for a couple weeks

Since I tend to use both hands to open the slipjoints, I have fewer problems than I do with the big tacticals, where I get over confident with the opening/closing and my thumb slips or something. Fixed blades and traditional slippies I rarely get cut unless I'm clearly using the wrong knife for the task. My case stockman bit my wife though, I forgot she wasn't really used to them (she usually uses an opinel) and my warning didn't come in time and the snap of the blade closed got her (not badly).

So, who here cuts themselves on a semi-regular basis?

I have two boo boos on my hand from my new Northfield #76. And the knife is so sharp that I never knew when it happened. I recall a Case Peanut slicing me real good, and my worst one - which still makes me shudder - was when I was polishing up the blade on an old Shrade USA and ran my finger down the sharp edge. But this is the price we pay for playing with sharp things.

I get a nick occasionally but I'm pretty careful and have been handling pocket knives for 50+ years. Now that I've said that I'll probably cut myself within the next few days! :p
