I misplaced my drill bit size guage . You know the one . A flat plate of hard steel with a set of drill bit holes according to their size .

I don,t often use all the sizes . Just 23/64ths , 11/32nds and 5/16ths .
It is used to measure the size and scrape smooth the surface of arrow shafts I make .

Drilling holes in a hard piece of wood wouldn,t work . I may not even have all those sizes . I guess I could go to the local hardware for a cheaper modern version . I know mine will turn up . I have given over transporting said affairs in plastic grocery bags when I go to shoots . I end up looking like the bagman of Alcatraz .

I have started collecting or making small leather kit bags . Each so distinctive from its brothers so that I know what kit is in there . Their shouldered array may look a bit eclectic . At least Its better than Price Chopper bags .

Anybody have an idea for a substitute sizer ? I have about seventy five shafts to scrape . I will proabably only do about a dozen like this . It takes about a day an arrow from plank to shootable arrow . There are just too many other skills I want to improve to spend all my winter months on one .

Instead of scraping I will plane or sand . But thats another story .

Maybe a collection of copper tubing bits???

I'd love to see these leather bags you're making.

Oh Andy most of the bags are flea market finds . There is a nice small one with an oil tan . It has that wonderful thin durable flexible feel to it . Not much to look at . It will proabably be one that will be passed down to my children .

A large possibles bag acquired in the same manner . I am sure it could carry the hind quarter of a deer . (Darn ! Now I,m hungry again.) The rest are a hodge podge of zippered Calvin Klein mini back packs and lesser modern errors.

The bags I have made myself are still in the error stage as well . I did supervise the making of a drawstring pouch for my daughter . As she provided the work and I the dubious expertise it is for her to claim the credit . I did fashion a needle out of split bamboo which served rather well .

I may make a flute bag with a silk lining for a music teacher friend of mine . If it is worthy of seeing the light of day I,ll let you gaze upon it in wonder . (Oh boy.)

Kevin, when I saw the title of this thread, I couldn't help but think of you dressed up as Britney Spears sitting there typing it out.

Hi Kevin,

A quick question. I enjoy leather work but have never used leather for hiking and such applications before because I never know how to clean the inside of the leather bags. The outer side of the leather is easy to maintain once it is oiled -- just wipe and you are off -- but how do you clean the inside of it with the nape exposed and all? Would appreciate any advice you can offer.

Thats a good one . There may be someone on here better versed than I on flesh side leather cleaning . The best advice to give which is no advice at all is to not let it get dirty .

If you can turn the bag inside out without rubbing the dirty surface unduly do so . Make sure the leather is in excellent shape or the cracking caused by this will do more harm than the cleaning will do good .

Presumably it is not an overly greasy or oily and dirty surface . You could use a strong wet dry vacum with a bristle attachment . Do not use it without the bristle attachment as you may just eliminate the problem altogether . More or less lightly brush the surface and allow the diffused suction to remove loosened surface debris .

After the surface is as clean as can be made you could froth on a saddle soap with a clean bristle brush using light circular strokes and immediately vacumn it off again with the wet dry . You don,t want the soap to dry/soak in as it may just carry particulate matter deeper within the structure of the leather .

Really it may be best to ask another . I most use my leather gear for non soiling storage such as sharpening kits , rivetting kits and so on .

Food storage or other applications which may deposit organic particulates are left to other bag materials .

I was thinking of britney spears too ...... hehe

Josh .......... Xinel ?........ What if I too , somehow , deep inside the twisted passages of my dungeon doored subconcious , was also thinking of Britney ?

Albeit I have not seen video of the overaged teenybopper in decades. Her music makes me gag. :foot:

Could this be some sort of denial ?

No I am absolutely , positively, assuredly , not,.............. sure . :D

Thanks for the instructions Kevin.

I wasn't thinking along the lines of organic foodstuffs etc and most of my kit is kept well cleaned. I can just imagine that regardless of how clean you keep you stuff, dirt just builds up over time or gets in through a combination of unlikely events. It's nice to know how to get the crud out.

Good luck with your bags.

Uh, I dunno, Kevin. I sure hope you don't look like Britney, but if you do, maybe we can hook up sometime.

When I saw Richard Thompson, he actually played "Oops I did it again" and it was awesome. He gave me a new appreciation for the song.
