Oops! Well, this Damascus is pretty tough!

I was cutting up some old towels to use during honing (water stone abrasives get messy during razor honing, and cross contamination will ruin a job...so I use a towel once and toss it...I digress).

Anyway, I found this old golf towel and started cutting it and heard a nasty metal on metal sound. Doh! Face palm!

Not only did I slam the blade into the rivet, I did so hard enough to bend the dang thing. Then it glanced off and scraped across the blade face.

Once again, I'm impressed that it's not worse. not even much of a character badge (shrug).

That damage is not bad at all for hitting a rivet like you did. Like you said, it adds a little character.

Starting to get really impressed with the damascus CRK uses. Not just for looks!

Excellent...it's all going as planned *rubs hands together*

Good stuff unit, this stuff is tough! Im surprised you never experience any corrosion though, my DT constantly has 3-4 tiny little brown spots building back up by the heel of the blade. They always come back. Heated+oiled up properly with frog lube, always blown out after washing, never put away soaking wet. They only seem to pop up in that spot. There are so many tiny marks on mine now that it bothers me less and less every day about the brown spots, I just don't get why I get them and no one else seems to.

Yes that is odd. I have never really liked this blade (save for cutting bacon and other greasy meats) and I have gotten it wet many times (including several episodes of chlorinated pool water, and days of very hard work that involved my cloths becoming saturated with sweat). I guess I'm just not as caustic as I thought;)

Seems to no longer be an issue without the pocket sheath. Since I stopped using it, the spots don't return. It must've been trapping moisture in between the layers of steel by the heel...

I wouldnt call that damage from the photo. All I see is a scratch- which the knife is supposed to get when used. :)

Right on. I wouldn't call it damage either...really, it's not even much of a scratch (compared to what I might have expected).

Unit, I think I've found the greatest flaw with DT blades....There's a 9 month back order on them according to Heather!!!

Also, whats going on with your edge if you don't mind my asking? It looks like you have a wider angle as you move towards the tip. Am I just seeing the semi convex shape of the edge? I wonder because your edge looks flatter than a factory edge, but the tip/belly areas still seem wider. Very cool!

Good eye.

I have developed a preference over the years for a compound edge. Wider at the tip for piercing and heavy tip work, thinner toward the rear for added sharpness for easier cutting of larger media where I use the back portion of the blade.

Just for fun, here is what I optimize my flats for (the belly and tip are wider and hold up a bit better, but don't quite push cut as effortlessly in thicker stuff).

If you want to see the video of this cut (and do the FaceBook thing) search for "honing by ewerstruly" and scroll down to August 5.

Wow. That would have made my heat skip a beat. I always wondered about those little guys. Couldn't even see a mark, must be good stuff. Gotta remember that.
