This was pretty smooth of me. I drilled out the hole for the tang of a hunter blade (this part always kicks my ass - any tips would be appreciated ;) ). Anyway, I found some side-cutting bit at Home Depot and I got a little wild hogging out the hole. I was tired and not paying attention to the "side-to-side" hoggin. I had used Nick and Primos' tip on using pins to hold the guard in place so I was feeling pretty good about myself when I starting to form the handle and guard and made a window. :grumpy:

Here's a very crappy pic. :D

1. You made a survival knife. You can store matches and a fish hook in there.

2. Put an inlay in there.

3. Drill it all the way through and put a lanyard in it

4. drill more holes in it all over the place. fill them with black epoxy. after it dries Shape it and pretend you did it on purpose

hey Michael, been there done that. :( Is the drill bit a milwaukee pathfinder. I've been looking for one of them, I even checked at the milwaukee store there on Chestnut. They didn't have any. I'll be in Springfield on Friday, got to haul the boys stuff back to SMS. Maybe I'll swing by home depot and get me one, if it wasn't milwaukee what brand was it.

Thank you,

Bill

Yep, done that too :(

Sure sucks when it happens!

That's why I've gone to drilling fairly small holes and then using the broaches to clear out the hole.

Hey Bill, Milwaukie quit making that bit, so if you find one it's just left over.

I never have used one, but heard they're really slick.

Yeah, I read about those broaches -- Edited to add: I just read how you made 'em. I think I'll make myself a set.

Burch, for such a simple tool, they work amazingly well. I can't remember how I cleared out a handle hole without them.

I forgot to mention, I was drilling a hole in a block of ring gidgee on the drill press but didn't have it in a vise. I was just holding it at an angle, and drilled right out the back side of the block! I missed my hand with the bit by about an 1/8"

I like the survival knife idea, handy! :)
