I picked up a piece of oosic at Ron Duncan's hammer-in yesterday, had a great time again this year, talking, watching and BSing with all the makers. Thanks Ron and Corbin I really enjoyed it.

Anyway to all you oosic users, is it best to have oosic professionally stabilized or is it not necessary?

Thank you,

Bill

I get the willies just thinking about cutting and grinding oosic (no pun intended). Sorry from me too...

Oosik is unstable by nature of anatomy. It depends who is handling it as to how much it swells.
OK,That is out of the way.If it is fully mineralized, all it needs is to be ground to the rough shape and then saturated with cyanoacrylic (super glue). It can soak up a lot. When the resin has cured finish grind and sand to a fine finish and buff gently. If it is still fairly new oosik (more like bone/antler),send it to Mike at WSSI and have it done professionally.

In a serious mode, Stacy's advice is the way to go.

In the spirit of the subject, maybe you could send it to the Mustang Ranch in Nevada and get it work hardened....

the thicker super glues seme to do a good job. Wish I could post pic's here. I use a lot of it, and Ancient Sea Cow. which looks very similar. http://www.lovettknives.com/ Have some posted on USN, under Stiff Horn. Mike Lovett
