So I plan on going camping soon and generally carry a large fixed blade knife, mostly for around camp chores. this time I'll be hiking in and out and most likely be wearing the large knife in its sheath on my belt also strapped to my thigh since its a large sheath knife. Any help as far as legality?

Call you local park ranger, be honest with them, and they'll tell you the rules. Varies a lot by type of park and state.

Definitely check with local law enforcement. I'm in Ohio, and our laws are EXTREMELY vague. I asked a cop about a SOG Flash 2, regarding the legality of the assisted open and blade length. He pointed at the pocket clip (only part visible) and said, "I consider that 'in plain sight.' Assisted openers are ok, and blade length only matters if it's concealed." He went on to explain that he (nor any of his fellow officers) had ever gotten into anything with anyone strictly because of a knife. However, if you were already causing him trouble, he'd be likely to consider a pen knife a concealed weapon.
