Open carry of hunting knives in Texas

A few weeks ago, while sitting in a church worship service, I noticed a man across from me with a knife in a holder on his right hip/side. It caught my attention primarily because of it's size. It was what I would describe as a hunting knife, not a knife one would use for whittling. It appeared to be between 8 and 11 inches including the handle. I tried to find a similar picture on the internet and the only one that came close was the Bear Brylls Ultimate Knife. I know zero about knives. But it was in some kind of holder which would probably added something to the length. Again the overall size of the knife is what got my attention. Not the kind or size of a knife one would carry in their pocket. This was not what I expect to see in that kind of environment/church. I am not expressing a knee jerk reaction just being more alert and attentive these days. I know that Texas has passed a law allowing open gun carry for those who have concealed gun license and maybe carrying knives are included??

What is the Texas law concerning such a knife as this and carrying it in public?

Thanks

I say a man can carry whatever he wants regardless unless he is acting in an absurd manner.

You can open carry a knife up to 5 and something inches if I remember correctly. No offense, but why did it alert you?

You don't have to have a CCW to open carry I don't think and I know you don't need one to carry a knife. Maybe if it's concealed but not open carry. I can understand why you might think it's strange in a public situation like that because that's kind of the stigma along with knives and guns. But just realize that if he is acting in an intelligent way then he is using it as a tool, not a weapon. I'd bet you'd be surprised to know how many people carry knives, guns, and everything else that pass by you every day without anyone knowing.

Unless something has changed, law on carrying knives in Texas can be a little tricky. Generally you cannot carry an "illegal knife" and that has been defined as anything with a blade over 5.5 inches or a knife that is a dagger or Howie. It is the definition of dagger or Bowie that can get tricky. With fixed blades, I generally stick to knives with blades less than 5.5 inches and only sharpened on one side.

My understanding may be a little out of date so hopefully someone more knowledgeable will jump.in as well.

The open carry law doesn't go into effect until the new year and I'm not sure knives are involved. I remember the blade length under 5.5 inches being legal.

There is no "open vs concealed" carry in Texas with respect to knives.

There is only "legal vs illegal". The terms refer to whether the knife may be legally carried in public, i.e., off one's own property or vehicle, or on private property owned by other for which you have permission to be, i.e., you are not trespassing.

To be a legal knife, the criteria is simple - the blade from tip to guard/bolster (or where the guard or bolster would be if the knife in question had a guard or bolster) must measure less than 5.5 inches and be single edged.

So as long as the knife BLADE is less than 5.5 inches and has a single sharpen edge, it is legal to carry it in public anywhere in Texas, except where prohibited, e.g., court houses, schools, private businesses with their "employee policies".

The preemption law which went into effect last September 01 nullified all city ordinances regarding the public carry of knives, so various city ordinances were invalidated. There are some ordinances still in effect, such as municiple courtrooms. I am not sure if the preemption bill had any effect on Tyler's prohibition of knives on public transit or not.

With respect to machetes, they fall into the "illegal" knife category as they obviously have blades longer than 5.5 inches. However, you can carry them in your vehicle. I have one in the truck behind the seat and one in the trunk of all cars because if you need one NOW, you can't be having to drive back home to get it. If you need it for work, it is legal to have your work tools in your vehicle. When you arrive at your work site, you have permission to be there to do work, so you may legally possess and use your illegal knife to legally perform the work.

You just can't carry your machete down the street, waving it like an idiot. Or any knife for that matter, because that will fall into the category of "brandishing", which is a different law all together.

To the OP, unless the church in question has a "no knives" policy properly passed by its "church council" (or whatever the denomination calls their governing organization) and publicly posted in a prominent place, there is no prohibition on carrying a legal knife of any kind.

I EDC, literally, paired fixed blades. Even to church. MY church fixed blades have 3 to 4 blades and are of the slim "bird & trout" variety. Outside church, 5.25 inch Kabar shorties. No one says a thing at church to me, but then I was baptized in that church 61 years ago and serve as one of the pastor's assistants during Communion. On a given Sunday, out of 100 adult worshipers, there are 15 open carry and probably triple that in pocket/purse carry knives. Even my 80 y.o. mother has a pocket knife in her purse. A Buck 284 that I bought her because she wanted a knife to carry when she saw how often I used one AT CHURCH to cut things.

I was visiting a church in Stillwater, Oklahoma, a Sunday or two ago, and I noticed a few Cowboys wearing fixed blades. You got to understand though here in Oklahoma, you'll see quite a few people wearing their best jeans and boots to church, while us city folk, (I'm from Norman, Oklahoma) might be wearing a suit or slacks an nice shirt. So it doesn't really seem out of place to see some fixed blades at church in some of small towns. Can't really say that I remember seeing any knives in church in Oklahoma City. But I can remember when we wore our Buck 110's to school in sheaths on our belts. You just didn't take them out to be goofin' around with them though.
