OK they don't really rule - I just made that up.

Actually I'm now at the one year anniversary of using a 2hp, open enclosure, treadmill motor on my KMG. Heck I don't even have the dust covers on. I even run the output voltage over 90VDC. I think it's set to 95.

Flirtin' with disaster
Livin' on the edge
Goin' for the gusto

Mr. Excitement that's me.

(If you actually met me you'd see the humor in that.)

Steve

That's just crazy talk.

My mother told me I couldn't hang out with you anymore.

lend him a pair of yours
you should have some used ones you're
not using or are
you still hanging with the drag Queens down there
and letting them have them
 :D

Steve you're just throwing good money out the window. I'll send you my address and after spending a little of it covering your motor, you can begin sending all that other extra moolah to me. Okay? Thanks Man!

You only live once Steve....go for it. I'm a wild one too. I once tore the "do not remove under penalty of law" sticker from a mattress!

It wont work. It will short out. I'll tell you that again next anniversary. And every one after that.

What? You think you're some kind of Jedi, waving your hand around like that? I'm a Motor, mind tricks don't work on me. Only electrons. No voltage, no spin, no deal!

I had an open motor on an old industrial grinder (original to the machine) that ran for 10 years, for me, with minimal dust covers before the dust got to it. Lord only knows how long it was on the machine before I got it but the machine was 40 years old.

It ran on 600V 3 phase by the way...When it burned out I replaced it with a 7.5HP enclosed because it was cheaper to replace than to rewind the antique.

My right angle hand held grinder that I use for buffing and grinding usually has to be disassembled once a year to clean out the buildup of buffing lint which causes the unit to overheat but that only takes an hour or so.

I have replaced every open motor on my equipment except the one on my 4' wood lathe. The buffers have killed more than their share. The open motors are cheap at yard sales, so what can I say? I have one good $5 spare left, an identical 1hp Baldor that matches my Wilton grinder, and it is going to stay put away, I hope! For only a buck or two, the open motors are a pretty cheap replacement and get at least a year or two service. BUT, the danger of burning down your shop or getting fried may not offset the savings, I tell myself. Of course, knife makers like to live on the edge, anyhow! IG, my wife is going to send you her used panty hose. She says also, don't wear them over your head to the 7-11 store, just place them on your motors.

Oh! You're supposed to put the panty hose on the motor!?

I thought it was a dust mask for me. No wonder that lady .... well I better not say - I didn't like her poodle anyway.
