I'm short and fat
at 5'6", 200 pounds. I recently bought a Busse Boss Jack proto with a fuller and small
choil. Carrying it on my hip in a kydex or leather
sheath is really the best way for me to
carry it. However, I'm having issues
with having to pull the knife up so high
to get it in and out of the sheath. If I
put the sheath down lower, it'll dig into
whatever I'm sitting on when I sit
down. The open spine design seems
like it would take care of this issue I'm
having. What do you think? Who would
do a Boss Jack sheath like that?

Send me a e-mail please.
You can get an original Buy Brown exposed spine sheath :)

That's a good option(open spine sheath). Other options are a dangler sheath, scout carry, or a baldric carry rig. I'm 5'6" and 190 so I can understand the issue you're having.

With some blade shapes, such as the kukri, open spine is the best option.

One question for you guys, and Mr. Brown especially. Do the kydex open spine sheaths have to have the retainer strap? Can't they be held tight enough by the kydex itself? I really would not want to fool with a snap like that all the time.

These particular ones need the strap but a sheath can be made to have the knife break out of the front, the only problem with that is you could break it out or a tree limb or a foe you are fighting with.
The strap adds a level of security.
I use pull the dot snaps so that they do not come undone accidentally.

If you are needing to draw the knife quickly and do not want to have to "draw all the way up to your arm pit" or use a Exposed spine sheath try cross draw at either a horizontal or 45 degree angle with a regular enclosed sheath.

Hope that helps.

Please e-mail me if I can help.

Good to hear from you again, David. The only issue I'm having with a horizontal draw or even at a 45 degree angle is then the sheath is concealed by my jacket. Fixed blades cannot be carried concealed here in Maryland. Let me do some more research on carrying positions with the sheath I have now. If I cannot really figure out a way to comfortably carry within the specs of the local laws, then I'll have to confer with you and we'll come up with a sheath that'll fit my needs. I've looked at your work, and it's really second to none. My wife is giving me a couple hundred dollars for Christmas that I'll have to spend (I bought her a new Honda Pilot)......
