I am really new to this Benchmade Knife hobby. I realized tonight that with the 555s mini griptilian you can pull the axis lock back while flicking the knife to have it open one handed and super fast. I also own the Benchmade AFO Auto and I think the mini griptilian is faster than that thing when opening it that way. Is that the way everyone does it, or is there a better way? Thanks

. . . with my 940 I can place my thumb under the thumbstud and flick it open.

That's like using it as a gravity knife. The only thing I don't like about doing that with my Axis, and Rolling lock (on my SIFU) is that it is not very controlled. Sometimes the blade could rebound off the stop pin and not lock if you don't release the lock at the precise moment. I've seen this happen whenever I've let a newbie try to open my Axis. They automatically assume that you MUST pull the lock back to open it and then they flick too hard and blade bounces out of control. I also like to keep my knives pristine and don't want to trash them so I make sure I show the newbie first how to open it.

My 710 Axis is so smooth that I don't need to open it that way. A modest flick on the thumbstud will shoot the blade out like an auto.

Many puritan knife nuts will refuse to open any folders in either of these ways especially on lockbacks since they can put undue stress on the spine.

I love the axis-lock because of it speed. The axis lock holds the blade in the handle. If push on thumbstud until the blade is about 3/4" open, a slight wrist flick will launch the blade into locked position.
