Could someone please explain how a "flipper" is opened. I can't see how it would be better than a spydie hole or similar set-up.

thanks

A lot has to do with the knife and how the flipper is designed. For example I own several knives with flippers, but find the Carson designed flipper on the CRKT M16 - M21 series to work the best. Basically you just rake your index finger over the flipper ( which is part of the blade and extends over the handle) and the blade will propel out. Some knives have smaller flippers and some are even hidden, but the Carson flipper is the easiest for me to use.

For me it's easier than any other method including A/O and holes.

Do you know if there's a short video on line that shows one being opened?

thanks again

It varies from knife to knife. A Hinderer Flame, an excellent flipper, you have to almost push straight in on the flipper, some of them you just run your finger down the spine, some need a slight wrist flick and others, like a Boguzuski you just have to breath on...

i have a leek/chive that has a flipper and is A/O. all it takes is a slight push on the flipper and it's open

The video gives a pretty good example of a flipper opening. thanks for the help.

Flipper advantages:
fast
easy to learn
keeps fingers totally away from anything sharp
acts a a guard when open
will pinch your finger instead of allowing the blade to close on you during lock failure

I ran across high class flippers for the first time at a recent knife show and was surprised at how easy and practical they were to use. Much more intuitive than studs and less fussy.
