Opening and Closing "Gently"

I was just showing a friend the new Case 64052 with Autumn Peachseed scales my father in law brought me back from a huge knife shop in Tennessee. When I had finished, I closed the blades with care, rather than with a "snap".
He remarked that he liked the sound of the "walk and talk" (snap) of pocketknife blades.
I was just wondering how many of us close the blades of our folders gently.

With traditional folders such as yours I always make sure that none of the blades are touching each other or the liner due to poor alignment. If they are all free of each other then by all means listen to that nice walk and talk snap when closing. But if anything rubs I am very carefull closing because it will only help produce some nice looking scratches on the blades.

Will,

I always open and close my knives "gently". A lot of people get pleasure from "flicking", I am just the oppposite. I get pleasure from the slow, smooth precise motion of opening a quality foler. Call me crazy.

Amen Louis,

You're not crazy.

I don't care what anyone says, but flicking is just as bad for the pivot, lock, and other knife parts as the ridculous "spine whack" test. The parts were not designed to move that fast or hit that hard.

Actually "gravity" knives, and those that open "by centrifugal force" are technically illegal up here on Canada, so even the knives that I own that are flickable don't get flicked. I just don't want to get into the habit, you know. Personally, for 100% reliable opening an lock engagement I follow the blade all the way out to the fully locked position with my thumb. That way I know it's going to go all the way, and I can feel/hear it lock up. Plus I too enjoy feeling that smooth action of a decent folder that is fully broken in.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I treat my firearms the same way. Magazines are inserted gently and cylinders are closed with care. No "slapping".

I honestly don't pay that much attention to how I close my knives (as long as my fingers are out of the way).
I don't "baby" my knives, if they can't take alittle roughness then I don't need them.

i open and close all my knives gently.
Ilearned this serveral years ago from from a knifemaker. He showed me on a hungarian-sheperds knife (which he made) the possible results of of a rude treatment. I was so impressed that I give a little extra care to all my knives.

BTW it really hurt's me if someone closes one of my knives with a snap.
