opening champagne with a khukuri or katana?

a good friend of mine (has some HI khuks too) wants to borrow my HI katana to celebrate. She needs it to "behead" some bottles of champagne (I am invited).

Anyona any idea how this is done 19th century style?
and would a khuk be more versatile?
Will it damage the katana?

Satori did some extensive investigation on this about a year ago (I think). Might try searching on 'champagne' or 'bottle opening'.

I have seen on TV that somebody.........as a ceramony.........opened champagne with a board sword or of the kind...........just slid along the bottle neck and nipped the cork.........voila ! cork just popped by itself.........no damage to whatsoever.......... :)

And he did it,, and it won't damage the blade, ask him ,, i had a first had view and it is nice,, :D

The video link will not work because I don't have that vid up. I'm pretty sure that it's still kicking around on my computer somewhere. If possible, I'll put it back up after work. Check again tonight or tomorrow.

Obviously it works with a sword as well but I'd be very careful about where my hand was.

It also seems to work with beer but as the internal pressure is less I'd be worried about glass bits getting into the brew. (In the case of champagne, there's enough internal pressure to blast everything outwards.)

Satori did the trick just fine here at MWKK05...

I just picture someone not accustomed to swinging a khukuri as skillfully as he does though and simply removing their own hand in the process.

It'd be cool to see it on video but might hurt sales.

Satori is a very skillful bladesman. He has my respect. I use a SAK to open beers, myself.
 
Scared the pi$$ out of me, too. I'd never tried to do a bottle of Heineken before that. :) I hadn't counted on just what a PITA it would be to find the top of a Heineken bottle in the grass at night either.

Skillful? I'm the only guy that managed to hit himself. :o
 
It was just a superficial flesh wound. You handled it well. I'm sure the blood has washed off Nasty's patio by now:barf:

It is less safe than chopping wood and more safe than seppuku.

If things go wrong, will you miss the hand? ;)

If you want to do it anyway, wear a thick leather glove on the hand holding the bottle and protect your eyes with something. Keep the holding hand underneath the bottle and behind where the blade will contact the glass. Slide the blade along the glass until it contacts the rim and the top should pop. I come in at a sharper angle to make it look more dramatic but this is far more dangerous than sliding.

BTW, that link should be working again. The champagne sabering is up on the thread that I linked to.

I just did another one with an actual saber (instead of a khukuri) and Cndrm's assistance as cameraman. I should have that one up tonight as well.
 
Thanks Dave. Got a little experience taking video with digital camera. Usually mountainbikes though.

Next time, I'll come over and just walk around barefoot. Glass, staples, nails, cable ties, lost gun parts, dress pins, what-have-you all grow legs and transport themselves into my path. Never fails.
