Pheasant hunting! Sadly, I have to work Saturday till noon, drive ~2 hrs and hope that we get some quality daylight and bird laden fields. Sunday will be all day, with at least two promised hot spots to hunt. We usually hit it hard at daybreak as the birds come out for breakfast and again near the end of day as they head back to bed.
This will be the defining year for my hunting partner's pointing Lab. Last year, he was too raw and he didn't have his hunting collar yet. No excuses this year! Hopefully during mid-day, we will go whack some squirrels... one of my favorite critters to hunt.
The gear: Winchester 12ga. pump for the pheasants. Ancient yet deadly .22 bolt action and single shot .410 for the tree rats. And just for kicks, my Colt .45 for blowing up water filled milk jugs if we get the chance. Hunting buddy also has a super Redhawk in .44mag for added fun. Bringing my BRK Mini Canadian and a custom stag handled drop point for my knives. Leatherman Wave and Surefire round out the gear.

Anybody else exercising their Y Chromosomes this weekend?

(Hmmm, 72K+ members here and NOT ONE pheasant hunter?)
Cliff notes report: Got two birds myself, hunting partner got 3. Dog did MUCH better, though busted about a dozen birds first thing Sunday AM... was too far ahead and too damn excited to come back. Did not get a chance to whack any squirrels, nor shoot the .410, .22, .45, or the .44mag. BRK mini canadian did a fine job cleaning the birds.

I've never seen a pheasant outside of F&S.

When you want to have me up? :D

It means that I'm not interested in pheasant hunting. Perhaps you would find more interested individuals in a relevant forum, such as the community center. Pheasant hunting is neither gadget nor gear.

.....but it is fun, and eventually delicious, and you use GEAR.

(Don't be such a poophead)

I carry a Remmy 1100 Special Field 12 gauge. I generally hunt the farm in back of my place. I had Dad "strip" out 2 six row strips, and I hunted them last Sunday morning. One got up behind me, one passed in front of my house (no shot fired), and one got up in front of Dad's combine, but I passed on it, because it was cheating and too easy. (REALLY!)

Net result: None in the freeezer, but a great time in the memory banks.

Mongo, I went on the weekend of the 4th also. Had a great time, sounds like you did too. A few of the guys from the old school days meet at an out fitter (Rattle Snake Creek.) We tell the same stories we have been telling for 30 years but laugh harder than ever at them. I put together a little website to send to the guys but you are welcome to look at the photo's if you want.

Mongo, take me with you... PLEASE...

I have been so darned busy after deer season (tagged a 4x3 103 lbs hanging weight) that I haven't even had time to fish (only got out a couple days, did put one nice 28 inch Coho in freezer).

and my Mossburg 835 hasn't killed anything but clay pidgeons yet.

Hey Lizardman... how long have you had your 835? I bought one this past spring as a dedicated turkey gun. Was thinking about getting a different choke or two and trying her out as a skeet and pheasant hunting gun. Worked fine and dandy as a turkey gun!

Knzn, it's all about tradition and keeping the friendships alive and healthy. I haven't checked out the photos yet, but how did you all do?

Hey, maybe... just maybe we can convince Jedi that pheasant hunting is a great time on multiple levels. Come on Jedi... give it a try. You just may develop an interest.

had it about 3 years. with the standard choke (the one included with it) hits clay birds very well. I was taking it out of the safe two years ago and broke the plastic bead on the front sight, so I went to Sportsmans Warehouse and bought a few of the true-glo front sights for about $10.00 each, they threaded right in where the post of the original bead goes and makes a very nice front sight for clays.

I got it at Wally world when I was taking my father in-law hunting (well after one of the days) as I convinced my wife I NEEDED another shotgun (I only had a Winchester 1300 defender with 20 inch barrel, 7 round factory tube magazine and I put the pachmeyer pistol grip and slide grip, just like the factory slide grip but spoungey and easier to grip). When I explained to her that I couldn't legally hunt with that shotgun (and I had taken a couple grouse with her dads browning pump in 12 guage, this is at least a 50 year old shotgun) she agreed that I needed the shotgun :) I have bought most of the chokes for it, though have only used it with the factory all purpose choke.

Dave

P.S. I live in Eastern Oregon, lots of Pheasant, Chukar, quail, dove, grouse(mostly sage grouse), and crows (to keep in practice, yes Oregon has a crow season). Also year round on Starlings (which are also fun to shoot with a .22 rifle or pistol (10/22, or MK1 5 1/2 inch target made in 1973, or if I go aboriginal I use my blow guns if I can get close enough). We also have a Whole lot of Canada honkers and ducks (but haven't gone for them as wife doesn't like eating them). I also built an 30.06 a few years ago that I could pop the pheasant's head off at 100 yard, but alas bird is restricted to shotgun, black powder (shotgun), or archery here. Good luck on your hunt, get some Ringnecks for me.

Good friends, good food, good weather, good dogs, we did great. Oh yeah, lots of birds too.

no pheasant in this neck of the woods have been doing some deer hunting though, been carrying my savage 99 .300 savage w/a 3X9 redfield scope, glock 32C in a fobus holster, and spyderco Ti ATR and my greco recon fixed blade, my surefire E2e w/a KL1 head and surefire M3 round it out.

good luck to you guys,

Dayum, I just got totally overlooked. :D

Nah, just waiting for the proper bribe.:D If I wasn't a guest myself to where I was hunting, I'd have ya up... as long as you brought some good bourban and lot's o' knives for show and tell. I'm lucky I get to go when and where I can.

I'm just giving you some hell. :D

I understand totally. I get to hunt some pretty nice spots because of folks I've known growing up. My uncle is always saying, "I'd hunt over in your area if I had a place to hunt." I know there's a hint there, but as a guest, I'm not asking to bring along another guest.

Classic rig. Drool.

i have had the '99 since the early sixties when my uncle passed away, he left it to me (though i was only about 5 at the time, lol, it was in my dads care until i was old enough, about 10) so it sat in the closet for yrs, darned thing looks brand new, i think my uncle used it one time, then i used it a lot for a few yrs then got into bolt actions, anyway it looks like NRA 95+% i promise ya, i always thought it was a '50s model, one day was looking around on the net and found a sight with manufacturing dates, looked up the old '99 and it is a pre WW2 model, made in '39, ya would never know it ........

great old gun though, good calibre too, about like a .308 winchester really, a little slower (~150fps iirc).
