WASHINGTON -- The US Conference of Catholic Bishops launched on Monday a campaign to end use of the death penalty in the United States.

"We cannot teach that killing is wrong by killing. We cannot defend life by taking life," said Washington Cardinal Theodore McCarrick in announcing the campaign.

So now they have something they can talk about that doesnt involve bankruptcy or 12 year old altar boys. This just begs for a Michael Jackson joke, but I cant think of one!

I need to keep my opinions on the subject of roman catholics to myself so I'm withdrawing my rant.

I can, but I won't (don't want to be added to ANY MORE people's ignore list).

I find this whole topic rather interesting, considering that it's based on a mistranslation of the 10 Commandments. The original is "Thou shalt not commit MURDER" (and not all killing is murder). But, you know, why should we be concerned with accurate translation and interpretation of old documents (the Bible, Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, etc.)? They don't matter in our modern, enlightened era.

The U.N. will take care of us all! :barf:

I'm not up for a late night round of Catholic bashing.

Put a group up for potshots. Seperate their actions from the mainstream as if their special interest group was different from any other defined group.

Catholics are fine. I just wish they'd stop voting democratic!!

Im not trying to bash all Catholics, but I have no use for the leadership of the catholic church in America.
they have clearly allowed their own people to abuse our children and done nothing to stop it until forced to pay millions by the government.

the idea that these same guys are going to start a campaign in our country that is somehow related to right and wrong disgusts me.

You know, Danny, I'm starting to aquire a rather shocking world view. In it, the leaders of anything are always F0987:K? !! up because this world is also.

There are some stand outs occasionally. Chirac in France. The UN today.

oooh careful Munk, next thing you know, youll start implying that the govt might be lying to us about Aliens or some other conspiratorial paranoid stuff!

When you get right down to it, we haven't had a thread get really ugly in...what...over a week now. We're probably due for one.

From a purely secular point of view, though, I have to say that I do not support the death penalty as it exists. That's not to say that there aren't people in this world who very much need to die - it's simply a matter of me not trusting an organization with making this choice when they have a problem delivering my mail on time and routinely botch my pay.

Discussing another's religion is much like discussing another's wife - one must be very careful with their constructive criticism, lest it be taken for something other than it is.

I am starting to think that Abraham's example of living in some remote mountainous/ desert region with family, friends, lots of tents, livestock, and 300+ trained/armed men might not be a bad idea.

They would have to be very obedient men, though!

I guess I am pleading the 5th!(commandment, that is! ;)

I don't understand why Mr. Jackson is the brunt of so many jokes; he's just misunderstood...

Ok, I'll just say in print what's on everyone's mind

...Munk is conspiring with aliens!

Rusty?

I'll give you a shiny nickel if you lock this thread of generalized hate-mongering. This ain't the place and most people know better.

Be well and safe.

Before they erase the first amendment, let me say one last thing:
My post was not about religion, it was about credibility.
People we trusted betrayed us and then tried to start telling us right from wrong.
That's all I really meant to say. I stand by that opinion.

DIJ, it ain't about the first ammendment. These are private forums primarily owned by Spark and subletted to individuals.
The first ammendment doesn't apply here.
You've been around here long enough too know better. Like I've told you before, "Just stop and think before you post. If it isn't going too do anyone any good then don't post it." :grumpy:

Why did Michael Jackson cross the road?

He left his Jesus Juice on the other side.

see what happens when you run all the trolls off and use ignore list(fun as all that may be), things are definitely slowing down .

This is what happens when your intollerants of people with different opinions
than yourself, plain and simple stagnation. If nothing else the discourse is something to feign off the boredom....

I think of it different , I think that 99.995% of the people( the rest are saints or aliens I suppose) are at least 25% full of
it ( for one reason or another) , most more that that, the trick it to pick out the diamonds of reason and good ideas hidden in the rest of the crap and use them. Every body has something to contribute, sometimes it's not a lot but heah you got to keep loooking.....find that silver lining Ya know....

The thought that one source , be that a person or an ideology is the "absolutely" correct one all the time is absurd if not backward.

He sure looks like an alien to me!

Or as DIJ remarked at least a zombie.

Knowing a few rich people, I have found a lot of good, solid people, but there are a few that have the symptoms of Narcississtic Personality Disorder or NPD.

http://www.meta-religion.com/Psychiatry/Disorders/narcissistic_disorder.htm

They really feel that the rules everyone else is supposed to obey do not apply to them. For instance if they are stopped for speeding and they were at fault, they are likely to get mad at the cop and threaten to have him fired for singling them out and ticketing them.

It would appear that Jackson has done some very wrong things. Perhaps in the relative seclusion of his Neverland he felt the rules everyone else is supposed to play by, were suspended for him.

Not that I am accusing Jackson of pederasty, but it sure looks like the media thinks so, but I do have a close friend who is now 77 and was a pederast for almost 40 years before being caught. I had made friends with him before I found this out.

He was a pillar of the community. Multiple degress in medicine, psychaitry and religion. Brilliant and sensitive man.

Burned into my memory is the time he told me. I had asked to visit him and was sitting across from him in his living room when he told me. I must confess that I wanted to kill him right there. I think that pederasty is a horrible crime.

He offered me the chance to pick up and leave. I guess I was to stunned to move, so I talked with him about this. I did NOT want to know details.

He was, at the then age of 70, under house arrest. Forbidden to have a computer that could access the internet. Isolated with only a few, very few friends. His wife of 50 years had left him and refused to visit him during his prison term. She fianlly returned, but watched him carefully and was ready to turn him in if she suspected anything.

The broad brush: He was raised in a boy's school. He was molested at the age of 13 by an older man, a pillar of his community. When the man died, he began abusing younger boys. I did not ask for details.

He knew he had a serious problem, but he kept thinking that he had cured himself becasue he would go for 3 or 4 years without an 'episode.'

He could not seek therapy because they would have immediately pulled his licenses. A therapist is required to turn in pederasts and other serious criminal activities.

He finally began therapy in prison. The therapist, a woman, asked him the same question I asked : "How he could have done such a thing?" He told her that most pederasts consider it an act of love.

He said that she fixed her gaze on him, and said with an incredible intensity, "WHATEVER YOU CALL IT, NEVER CALL IT AN 'ACT OF LOVE!'"

The enormnity of his crimes hit him and he tried very hard to kill himself. He was on suicide watch for weeks.

Regarding pederasts, I do not believe in capital punishment. But I do believe in getting these people where they can not continue their pursuits and into serious therapy. Apparently, once started, there is a pernicious draw to return to pederasty, so anyone convicted should be under permenant supervision.

If this is the case with Jackson and it looks like it is, he needs to be put somewhere that he can not continue and carefully watched. It is also quite possible that some of the plaintiffs are just seeking money. I hope that the Courts can decide and take action.

Apologies for the long ramble.
