I don't have a photo archived of this issue, but I do have some production information and background on it. Here is the art mockup from my archive.

Since art mockups are in a sense "prototypes", they quite often vary significantly in appearance from the eventual samples and production knives. There are essentially photocopies with cut-and-paste (literally) artwork of scrim stamps and etches. It will be interesting to see how different the production art is from this mockup.

Yes, most likely the knife is a salesman's sample. There were usually fifty knives made with the "SS" serial, but not always.

If you remember, Desert Storm was just that. A whirlwind that rolled out of the desert and over Iraq. By the time these "commemorative" knives could be thought up, designed and approved, and produced, Desert Storm was a fact of history rather than current event. The production order is dated May of 1991 and calls for finished product by July of 1991. They were to be bonus knives given without charge to dealers who bought the HK91 hunting knife displays. I don't have a flyer (that I can locate) of the HK91, but here is an example of the HK92 with the 1992 502HK in place.

This Limited Edition bonus knife was accompanied by a more general issue of 10,000 desert camo Desert Storm SP-3 commem, and preceeded (only slightly) by a short run of Desert Shield commems.
